In July 1999, due to the poverty they were going through, Yanira, Max, and Alirio, made the hard decision of leaving all they had and their families, to seek a better life, and a better future for their families. They first had to come up with the money, to pay the person to get through Guatemala and Mexico illegally (El Coyote). On Monday the 5th, they took off on their journey, leaving El Salvador, in just a couple of hours. They spent 3 days in a hotel in Guatemala city, waiting to cross over to Mexico. This is when the suffering begins, Yanira relates how they walk through the mountains, through the darkness of the night.
For this final project, I listened to Emily Tigges and Greg Dobihal’s presentations on their family’s history and musical roots. Greg’s family has Czechoslovakia (father’s side), German (mom’s side), and Dutch (mom’s side) roots. Located in eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has very distinct genres of music. The most popular, the polka, is a form of Czech folk and dance music that utilizes a wide range of instruments, including accordions, trumpets, clarinets, tuba, and others. He also noted the important and popularity of Czechoslovakian classical music, citing Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” as an example.

This article will provide insight as to who William Grant Still was and what he did to illuminate his brilliance, and why he deserves to have his name forever etched in music’s history. Very few composers back in Still’s prime have been able to concoct memorable musical works of art. Although many have tried, few etched their name in music’s timeline. Listening to one of his pieces titled “Suite for Violin and Piano, Mvt. III” it becomes audibly evident of how jazz came to be what it is now. Still cut a path to new heights when it came to jazz.
The Dead House The book I was reading is called The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich. She is a writer of “psychologically sinister fiction” as described by her author bio in the book. What’s most interesting about her and this book is that she got the idea from a previous experience in her life. Kurtagich, at one point in her life, suffered from inversion syndrome (this is when someone is awake at night rather than during the day).
His father was a jazz drummer in “the CBS radio orchestra and the Raymond Scott Quintet” (“Biography of John Williams”). Williams grew up in a musical home, which influenced his desire in learning to play the piano at a young age. After mastering the piano he took interest in learning to play the “trumpet, trombone, and clarinet” (Eldridge). As a teenager, Williams spent his time writing music.
He is such an influential person in the music industry that he has been given many awards and distinctions, even after his death. It shows his worth for the music industry. His life has many lessons for those who have interest in music. He has been hard working, and throughout his life, he always thought of music and how to contribute to it. Such a professional approach to one’s career should be learnt from his life and this is why his life has been highlighted in this
Ellington was born April 29th1899 in Washington, D.C. His parents were also musically inclined which allowed them to raise such a talented son. At the age of 15, Ellington began playing the piano again. This tome he stuck with it and ended up writing his first composition “Soda Fountain Rag”.

While Lili is known to be more of a composer (being the first woman to win the much coveted Prix de Rome), Nadia is known to be one of the most influential musical teachers of the 20th century.

Beethoven is still remembered for his spectacular pieces in modern times. Beethoven’s music led others to take the art of music as a serious topic. His symphonies and sonatas were revolutionary to the music world, because of this, many people today are not aware of his deafness. His deafness eventually caused him to make sacrifices in his music career.
George Theophilus Walker was an amazing and talented composer. He composed many piano sonatas, operas, ballets, and many different types of music. Walker was an amazing composer and very good at what he did. Walker was the first black American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996. Walker was an amazing composer, a great and loving family man, a successful writer, and an inspiration to all who compose music or have composed any piece of music in the past with Walker.
Frédéric François Chopin was a brilliant musician who made an incredible impact not only on the Romantic Era (19th century), which is when he composed his works but also on countless musicians to come. He was a beloved Polish composer and pianist who, during his short 39-year life, was able to rise to become a cultural icon in music history. His main focuses in music were the melody, harmony, and specific piano techniques that were prominent during the Romantic period. His skill on the piano and his heart-felt pieces forever revolutionized the use of the piano for solo, musical pieces.
