The Vice President of the Confederacy Alexander H Stephens was very opinionated when it came to the differences between the northern and southern states. Many of his distinctions were mostly based on his idea of the south being in the complete right and the north was lining in falsehoods. His mindset was a very common idea held by most southerners at the time of the civil war. In the formation of the Confederacy, Stephens believed that there were basic rights and rules of nature that the Union was choosing to ignore.
Jumping forward to the Revolutionary time period, the religious ideas still held strong. Across the States Native Americans fought for their independence and freedom with uncanny courage much like the African Americans fighting in the Civil Right Movements. It was a community of Delaware Indians who had converted to the Moravian faith.
Alexander Stephens’ Cornerstone Speech in Savannah is unquestionably the most famous speech associated with the Confederacy. Stephens was speaking extemporaneously and later complained that his views had been distorted and taken out of context by Northern abolitionists. We have already seen that Alexander Stephens gave another version of the Cornerstone Speech a month later at the Virginia Convention. The fundamental racialist worldview articulated in both speeches is more or less the same: The status of the African negro in the Southern states was “the immediate cause” of secession. It was the “occasion” or “incident” of secession, which is to say, the spark that ignited the blaze.
George Washington, being the first president, felt that in order to maintain structure in the government after he was no longer in charge, had to leave a letter to his country’s citizens. Washington began his address by giving thanks and appreciation to everyone for giving him the opportunity to lead their country and explaining his reasoning for declining another term. The parents, James and Marilyn Lee, push their child Lydia to fulfill the dreams that they themselves aren’t able to pursue. At first Lydia is able to keep her parents happy by living up to their expectations but as time progresses, the expectations start to build up. In order to live up to her parents’ expectations and keep them happy, Lydia begins to lead a life of lies which eventually leads to her death. Marilyn pushes Lydia into pursuing the dream of becoming a doctor which she herself isn’t able to do.
