Yohji Yamamoto is a highly respected, self-made clothing designer. Yamamoto was raised in post-war Japan by a self-employed seamstress. In his earliest years, Yamamoto spent his time helping his mother and her friends in his mother’s clothing shop. He attended a French Jesuit school, then later graduated from Keio University where he studied law. After taking an interest in helping his mother's seamstress business, she replied angrily: "If you really want to help me, you must go to dressmaking school." As a result, Yamamoto obtained a degree from Bunkafukuso Gakuin College of Fashion in 1969. Two years after obtaining his degree he launched his Women’s ready to wear Label Y’s. In 1977 Yamamoto presented his first collection in Tokyo. Since his first collection debut in Paris in 1981 under his name, he has gained a mass following for his intricate and unique silhouettes. All the clothing material, created and sewn by his team are made in Japan. Yohji Yamamoto not only designed clothes and worked with famous designers, but he also created wonderful fragrances that filled his fans with peaceful scents. Yohji Yamamoto was a man of many traits.
