13. The author’s views towards the subject are understanding, and appreciative for what Chris McCandless had done. The author could relate to Chris’s story as he had his own experiences hiking alone in the wild with no way of getting help. “I would go to Alaska, ski inland from the sea across thirty miles of glacial ice, and ascend this mighty nordwand. I decided, moreover, to do it alone.”
America’s love for the wilderness has always been closely tied with personal values. Beyond just a love of nature, many would say the wild holds endless fascination due to the emotions it inspires and the values we connect to it, rather than just a fondness for greenery. Cronon’s “The Trouble with Wilderness” is one exploration of how wild was a culturally created ideal and the effect that it had on America. A more personal example exists in Krakauer’s Into the Wild, as Chris McCandless’s journey into the Alaskan brush was no doubt motivated by these ideas on wilderness, and the promise of personal fulfillment. There is a reason why we define wilderness as we do, and it is a view that not only affects our actions, but also how we interpret
AVID is a program not intended for everyone. This program exposes you to a variety of skills and mastery for adolescents desiring to attend college. Avid focuses around organization, teamwork, and for you to critically think. These skills are new to many and are provenly beneficial, however these skills do not favor those that have already had these skills and are show casing their full potential. Therefore, Avid is not for me since it interferes with my academic courses, mastery of avid skills and would not be beneficial for me because I have gained much of the skills and would rather interfer than assist.
The spirit of travel and adventure are perhaps two of the most deeply rooted emotions in the human species. From the time the ancestors left the plains and savannahs of Africa to venture forth into the unknown, the human species have steadily spread all over the world and even beyond it towards the stars. But closer to modern times, it came to a point where only a select few dared to travel, explore and try new and exciting things. One such person was Thor Heyerdahl.
There is a perfect freedom in the mountains, but it belongs to the eagle and the elk, the badger and the bear.” As stated by Momaday, Yellowstone is a very important place to him his tribe, and his ancestors. Revisiting Yellowstone made Momaday recollect the history of the Kiowas and everything that the Kiowas experiences. Through imagery by saying, “a region of deep lakes and dark timber”, “skyline in all directions is close at hand” and many other statements Momdays helps the readers imagine exactly what he is seeing while is is traveling through Yellowstone. The beautiful and historic landscape of Yellowstone and its meaning will leave a lasting impact on the mind of Momday for years to
Last summer, I traveled to Yellowstone National Park and it was breathtaking. I remember pulling into the park and just breathing in the smell of pine trees. As we were driving through the lush, green trees two brown bears emerged from the woods and calmly crossed the street. Later, we drove up the mountain and could see the entire park. It was an unforgettable sight, I saw everything from the various mountains to the pines and I could even see Old Faithful.
It has been my experience taking online courses that utilizing a program such as MindTap to support the textbook and professor’s instruction to be extremely beneficial. MindTap is a useful tool that reinforces the textbook with homework exercises and provides services to the student such as Net Tutor and Questia. I found using MindTap easy to use and navigate, all of the components are well labeled. The majority of the time learning a subject can be difficult without the use of visual examples. I especially liked the fact that a full copy of the textbook was available within the MindTap program and accessible at any time.
Throughout this semester, I have had many struggle when it came down to doing an assignment for ENC1102. When it comes down to my growth, I have noticed throughout my papers that various struggle I had in the past, are now not as difficult for me. One of the main examples of this is being able to clearly state my thesis. The thesis statement has always been an issue for me because I never really knew how to get my point across clearly through a thesis statement. When doing the proposal, I had to figure out how to properly state my thesis and have it linked into the rest of the paper.
English 102 through the Alabama Early College Program has taught me the importance of writing skills. When I first began online classes for English, I quickly started learning techniques that I needed to keep up throughout the semester. Each assignment and essay is due at midnight, therefore starting or finishing an assignment early allows the writer enough time to turn in the assignment. Throughout the five modules, I have learned how to write an argument and rhetorical analysis, conduct research and write an exploratory essay. In each module, I learned writing techniques and skills that I never knew before.
English 101 was a class that I put off taking my first semester because I knew that this was one of my weakest subjects. As time moved on, my skills improved, even though I always dreaded taking this class, because I had a fear of writing bad papers. I chose to have a positive attitude an open mind about my writing assignments to get the best outcome. I learned to be more organized and set time aside to read the book, write down the key points that I want to address to my paper, then analyze what I’ve written. Nevertheless, by doing this, it helped me to make the appropriate changes when it came time to submit my final drafts.
TITLE Absorb the Untouched Beauty of the Grand Canyon LEAD PARAGRAPH It’s no secret that The Grand Canyon, located partially in Arizona and partially in Nevada, is one of the most traveled to destinations in the United States. With miles of gorgeous views, hikes that will take your breath away (figuratively and literally), The Grand Canyon encapsulates the phrase “America The Beautiful.” While some people may think that this is a destination fit only for outdoorsmen and adventurers; think again.
My eyes automatically drifted to the tall bright palm tree that moved along with the rhythm of the wind. It’s leafs danced as they presented their welcome. The sun shined down and hugged me with warmth, giving my skin a tingling, but satisfying sensation. I had come from Virginia to California, the famous, constantly spoken of state, that finally reached my sight. The state presented its beautiful attributes to capture my wonder and mesmerization.
• What new insights have you gained on your Commentary topic throughout the process of drafting, researching, and revising? Did your point of view change at all? If so, how or why? I gained a lot of information about Common Core through my research, drafting, and the writing process for my Commentary essay. I learned about how Common Core was drafted and how many groups were involved in the writing development.
It was at this exact moment when I experienced my watershed moment. It was at this exact moment when I realized how even the things that we hate doing the most, are absolutely necessary to us because they define who we are as a person. I realized the issue with my life was not that I wasn’t intelligent, or that I was untalented at gymnastics, or that I had poor multitasking skills or an inability to cope with stress. My issue was my inability to want to get the best out of the advantages that the sport brought me. I had lived my entire life without realizing that all the work that I was putting into the gym was to eventually gain something greater.
This semester has been an ongoing challenge for me but has been an enjoyable one and I have not been presented with any impossible tasks. I have never been much of a writer, and during the course of this semester, I 've struggled to meet length requirements on the assigned essays. However, I do understand that not everyone is an excellent writer or even has to enjoy writing to get a good grade in this 1A class. From the start, with the first essay, I pushed myself to do my best and looked to multiple outlets to polish my writing, such as the online tutor, the writing center, the internet and the writer 's handbook.
