In the article You are Racist and You always will Be, by Jef Rouner, he explains how many American’s today are still racist. Even though we are racist, we absolutely hate being called that name. The problem is that because of institutional racial attitudes that are embedded in our society, we have not really moved past the issue of racism, even though it may seem so. This racism may not be exactly what you think it is, or as extreme as back in the day of slavery and segregation, but as Jef states, it is our problem to deal with if we wish to leave a different world for future generations. Jef includes examples of present day racism and its issues in the article. He states that blacks make up 20% of police fatalities, despite only being 13% of the population. Blacks also occupy a large part of our prison systems. Prisons can force inmates to work with little or no pay, so basically the prisoner is todays slave. Although I have never heard or really though myself that blacks feel less pain than whites, there are certain institutional racial attitudes towards black that I have been taught by society. High school in particular for me showed a lot of racism, and not just because our lunch tables always seemed to be racially segregated. For example, a lot of people think that black girls are stronger than white girls. So, in high school me and a lot of people I know would avoid confrontation with black girls, because we were afraid of what they could do to us. Although its not my fault that’s what I was taught, that is racist. And, unlike a lot of people, I will admit that. Another example of racism in my life comes from one of my best friends. Even though I know she tries her best to be a good person, she is a racist too. Her parents were racist, so she told me that she would never date a black guy.
