Throughout the story “In the silence” by Peggy S. Curry the protagonist; Jimmy is on a rollercoaster of emotions. At the beginning of the story, Jimmy is depressed and homesick because of his interactions with Angus Duncan. Although as he would finger is brooch he would remember home, this made him happier. When Angus sent Jimmy into “the silence” he was scared, scared of all the dangers around him. After a few nights “in the silence” he had already lost two of his sheep, one was killed when trampled by a horse, and another was dropped and killed by a sheep, he was worried about what Angus’ reaction would be along with the sheep’s safety in jeopardy.
In “Girl Unprotected”, Sports writer and journalist Laura Robinson argues that if you examine the Judicial system, then you will find a strong bias against victims of hockey abuses with an emphasis against women. Throughout her essay, Robinson uses the case against Mike Danton and the NHL to emphasize the issues of gender inequality and the lack of recognition to the abuses in hockey. In her essay, Laura Robinson begins her argument by claiming that “women’s bodies were only allowed to be adjectives to describe men” (Robinson 326). By doing so, she suggests that women’s bodies are all that the men in hockey care about while their mind’s and talents are ignored and lack in value. To reinforce her thesis, Robinson also includes a quote from a

Written in the first-person narrative that takes place in the distant future, Casil weaves a terrifying story of genetic alteration to “fix” our children’s flaws. What harm can it cause if gene therapy is performed as an elective procedure rather than medical necessity? Gary and Carolyn, expecting parents, find out their little boy will need gene therapy while still in the womb if they hope to spare him from a fatal heart condition.
The realistic fiction story, “Ashes”, by Susan Beth Pfeffer is about a young girl who has two very polar opposite parents. A fun, but irresponsible father, and a practical, proactive mother. Ashes faces a major dilemma when her financially troubled father asks Ashes to steal from her mother’s emergency fund for his own personal needs. Sometimes, the people you love most can be selfish and deceive you. This relates to my story because Ashes’ dad is manipulative, deceptive, and selfish.
Throughout high school teenagers are going through many changes. These young people are trying to find themselves and seek out who they truly are. Along the road they encounter peer pressure from people utilizing illegal substances. Even though school systems educate young minds about the use and consequences of illegal drugs, they still take the chances. The predominant complication that these adolescents come across is that upon interacting with the police, they are unaware of how to manipulate the circumstance.
In the novel Station Eleven, Emily St. John Mandel creates a parallel between a pre-apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic world affected by the nation-sweeping epidemic: The Georgia Flu. This dystopian world opens up the conversation about the following unresolved dilemmas: displacement, disorientation, dislocation, alienation, and memory. Each of the main characters faces a certain level of uncertainty while fighting for survival, evidently affecting them mentally, emotionally and physically. For this reason, some readers may question Mandel's choice to have her characters continue suffering from their inner turmoils.
Loose Women, is a collection of poetry written by Sandra Cisneros. A wonderful collection of words that speak to the beauty, disgusting, painful, extraordinary things about love, sexuality, women, bodies. Throughout the novel Cisneros revels in sort of “bad girl” image: however the overall persona is that of a passionate, sexual woman who’s had her share of both joy and disappointment. We all know Sandra Cisneros roots come from Mexico and is from Mexican American immigrant family and the culture for her is very different. I can relate to Cisneros’ culture different, since I am from Indian and in India women are considered to be the goddess from ancient time, however they are not being treated like goddess.
Andrew Hopkins kidnapped his daughter 28 years ago. His daughter Delia has now come to learn the startling truth, as a thirty-two year old mother of Sophie, who is of the same age as Delia when Andrew kidnapped her. Delia comes to find out throughout the book that her parents, Andrew and Elise, divorced when she was very young and her mother got custody. Her mother neglected her due to her alcoholism and during Elise’s blackouts, her boyfriend Victor would sexually abuse Delia. When Andrew learned of the horrors taking place in Delia’s life he kidnapped her and brought her to New Hampshire to raise her by himself.
Imagine being a 17 year old African American kid always being judged just because of his skin color. Everywhere you go you feel like all eyes are on you, especially when you go to a school that only has eight black kids. That's exactly how Justyce McAllister felt in Dear Martin by Nic Stone. In the book, the main character Justyce goes through a lot of conflict involving his skin color. Even though he has a full scholarship at Braselton Preparatory Academy, and is a very smart student, he still gets judged.
Everyone's family members should be the most important people in your life. They give eachother comfort and advice whenever they need it. Without a proper family, some people might not be where they are today. In “You Don't Know Me” by David Klass, John’s everyday life is shown through his own eyes. Throughout the book John’s perceptions on different things change a lot, but his perception on his family seems to be stuck in place until the very end.
In the novel If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin, we are introduced to two best friends that live next to each other and have kids who are the same age. The central idea of complicated conditions can lead to better situations is illustrated through imagery. Imagery allows the reader to visualize Autumn’s difficult family situations and her relationships with her friends. In this novel, imagery contributes to the development of the central idea. A few days following Autumn’s breakup with Jamie, her neighbor, Finny visits her.
Loneliness is a state many have experienced, but it is scarcely felt to the point of insanity and utter hopelessness. In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield’s loneliness is a self-defense mechanism from socializing with others, making it the greatest source of his pain. Though his loneliness is caused by uncontrollable external forces, it is only overcome by his own choice of introspection. Initially, Holden did not chose to be lonely.
In “I Lost My Talk” by Rita Joe, the poem describes how her experiences at a Residential School attribute to her identity and empowerment through poetry that uses symbolism, imagery, and visual mental images to illustrate themes, white dominance, and empowerment. The poem is written in the point of view of an indigenous woman born in the time during the residential school crisis. This was a time when genocide was taking place, mothers separated from their children. Kids were segregated like it was 1957, in other words, the white 's were in their own educational system and the indigenous were forcefully put in schools to be assimilated of their raising. To be assimilated is to strenuously forget about your history, culture, language, and traditions.
Have you ever wanted someone to tie you up to a chair? Have you ever tried to control your environment and the people in it? Controlling things can make you feel safe and empowering especially if you did not have a father growing up. Some individuals like controlling people by questioning them at random locations. Some also like to be controlling to the point of obscene acts from random men.
For example, in her analysis of Isak Dinesen’s “The Blank Page” Susan Gubar adopts the metaphor of “the blank page” to stress how women’s history silenced by the patriarchy can be subversive. “The Blank Page” is narrated on a wedding night where the stained sheets of princesses are displayed with their names to prove their virginity. Among these stained sheets is a plain white sheet with a nameless plate. “Dinesen’s blank page,” writes Gubar, “becomes radically subversive, the result of one woman’s deficiency which must have cost either her life or her honor [is] Not a sign of innocence or purity or passivity, this blank page is a mysterious but potent act of resistance” (89). The blank page shows the silence of women but it proves female resistance
