In the featured article "You Know What Scares Me? The Online Mob," the author, Margaret Wente justifies her opinion on the topic of how social media can damage peoples identity. First of all people are easily influenced by others, and tend to blame that it was in the heat of the moment. Once an act is committed it can never be undone which leads to the downfall of many. Wente continues on how social media has such a powerful hold on today's society that nobody thinks once its posted its there for eternity. The Online Mob" argues that everyday citizens commit crimes when influenced by others and society has become quick to criticize. The article itself proves how neighbours can turn you in for the slightest misconduct; even the exceptionally bright kid can turn sour in an instant. The use of social media is common among today's society and is shown to be very useful. With regards to the 2011 Vancouver Riot people captured pictures and videos of themselves and others committing crimes. In her ninth paragraph Wente states that "no one's infamy can be expunged in cyberspace," which is an accurate statement because what you post online truly isn't your property anymore. Having degrading images or videos lead to the downfall of many successful people, such as "young Nathan Kotylak" whose "image was posted online and his family [was] deluged with threats [and] had to flee their house." Everyone complains how the police should take action over these criminals when they themselves are committing a crime, cyber bullying. Cyber bullying accounts to the law if you are insulting, targeting, uploading, excluding, or harassing others on the internet and can lead to jail time. As Wente declares people get " kicked out of school, publically humiliated and fired from their jobs," because of these crimes committed under the influence of others.
