The impact of discovering the dark side of human nature, to be left in misery forever. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a story named Young Goodman Brown. Here Goodman Brown was led into the forest by an unknown man wishing to be his friend as he claimed to be both his father and grandpa's friend. Hawthorne makes use of imagery throughout his story with an addition to the use of symbolism to demonstrate that people aren't always as they seem, even your loved ones. Goodman makes it seem that his wife's faith is his actual faith that he has from his supreme being. “She’s a blessed angel on earth… I’ll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven.” ( Hawthorne). That if anything happens he will follow her (faith) and will be led to heaven. Goodman has lost all faith and has given up on the world as his wife, faith was taken from him. “There is no good on earth… Come, devil! For to thee is this world given.” (Hawthorne). Goodman's wife is his actual faith which is where the symbolism happened and with his faith gone there is no hope for the world. The symbolism that is used through is the wife who is named faith, as she is the most pure hearted person, and without her he feels as if there is no hope. Pink ribbons are used to symbolize innocence in the real world, and how they are represented throughout the story. The wife of Goodman Brown wears these pink ribbons, in order to represent purity. Brown loses them when he notices faith joining the “devil.” “Cries out to Faith to resist this evil.” (Gale).
