The first book that I will be discussing is a personal favorite and that is Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry by Doug Fields. This was one of the very first books that were assigned for class reading and honestly when I was reading the beginning of it I was scared to be going into youth ministry. I am not saying that I am not going into youth ministry due to this book, but Fields made it known that this ministry is not an easy thing. In the very beginning of the first chapter Fields speaks much on the longevity in youth ministry is uncommon and what this looks like to run a healthy ministry that will make us stay. Fields goes on to discuss how youth ministry is a marathon and ten commitments that help run this long tough race. The first commitment that I felt was extremely important was his first one, which was moving slowly within the ministry. This commitment is all about not drastically changing everything within the ministry, but taking it slow. Fields states, “It’s safe to assume you want to make some changes at your church during your first two years. Great! But these changes probably don’t need to be implemented right away” (Fields 23). Reid. This book is about challenging teenagers and indeed raising the bar when it comes to their spiritual maturity. The beginning of this book deals with the new generation and how to effectively minister to the youth today. Reid goes on throughout to evaluate how the new generation wants adults to treat them like adults as well. “These Millennials want us to teach them not only to be adults, they wants us to teach them to be godly adults” (29).
