In May 1991, zebra mussels were found in the Hudson River. 500 billion of these mussels were found in the course of a year. They looked seemingly harmless, but over time these mussels became a sort of threat. They were destroying the microscopic animals in the river. On the other hand, they also help out by a ton.
Eels used to migrate yearly from the Chesapeake Bay but have been blocked by the large dams on the Susquehanna River. Young eels were captured below the dams and transported here to continue their life span in these home waters. Eels are hosts for mussels which help purify the waters of Pine
Cool, calm crashing waves along the coast of the Great Lakes is an timeless picture many generations have enjoyed. The Great Lakes have the same beautiful views as it does in years past. However, the inside of the lakes have completely changed. It’s no longer the same lake your grandfather knows nor will it be the same lake for your grandchildren.
Plankton Activity Postlab 1) Apply 2.5: Use mathematical and/or computational representations to support explanations of factors that affect carrying capacity of ecosystems at different scales. Explain how the abundance of phytoplankton in the pond depends on the abundance of an abiotic resource such as nitrogen. - Phytoplankton are the producers in the pond. Species of organisms in ecosystems have their own carrying capacity relative to other species, and carrying capacities are determined by particular abiotic and biotic resources in an ecosystem. An increase in nitrogen levels in the pond (e.g. from fertilizers) will result in a dramatic increase in phytoplankton levels, but once phytoplankton population reaches its carrying capacity (determined by availability of other resources besides nitrogen, [DO] levels, predation etc.),
After watching the movie, “The Return of Cuyahoga River” I was blown away by all of the history, facts, ignorance, and activism displayed in this film. There was so much information packed into this documentary. Information about this 100-mile long river that curves north and then south as it u’s along Lake Erie, and how in “1827 U.S. citizens changed the Cuyahoga River for the first time.” It was originally a swampy marsh infested with mosquitos and caused problems for the city of Cleveland Ohio. Cleveland was a small lazy town until the mouth of the river was widened by humans allowing for mercantile boats to pass by their town.
Baleen whales, some of which are the largest animals to have ever lived on earth, eat some of the smallest, most abundant life in the oceans: plankton. Some baleen whales also eat small schooling fishes, and a variety of crustaceans such as krill, copepods, and amphipods. Baleen whales use baleen to strain food from the water.
What are zebra mussels? Zebra mussels are highly invasive freshwater bivalves native to the eurasia black sea region. Bivalves meaning an aquatic mollusk that have a compressed body enclosed
Lawrence and the streams and lakes emptying into the Georgian Bay. I have taken them in all these waters except the St. Lawrence, but a three and one-half-foot one is the largest I have ever caught. Each year on starting out I expect to catch a fifty-pound record-breaker, and on coming home I am glad that I did not. That pleasure is still reserved for me.
Previously, the most controversial issue about the Mississippi Delta was whether it was shaped like a leaf or like a foot of a bird. However, these simple days are no longer; the famous delta faces a great amount of crucial controversy. In the summer of 2005, Hurricane Katrina and Rita, caused the Mississippi Delta to suffer severely. When the monstrous storm hit, it demolished “nearly 2,000 square miles of deltaic wetlands,” meaning that even the defense against the flood was destructed. When the delta was devoid of protection, this lead to the river no longer being able to replenish the necessary sediments to continue the life of the delta.
When thinking of ecological significance of region in distress, many times we as people tend to think of just the damage that done to the “natural” world such as the animals, water, and herbaceous communities, but people are also a part of these environments and deserve equal concern. Bristol Bay is a southwestern region within Alaska, which encompasses 40,000 square miles that are home to over 25 predominately Native American tribes, each having their own distinct language, traditions, and dialect. The remoteness and low agricultural productivity of this expanse is balanced by the richness of its subsistence and commercial fishing industry, which happens to be the greatest in the United States and among the greatest on earth. The communities
The Placoderms: Where Are They Now? Introduction Fish have been around for hundreds of millions of years and probably will be for hundreds of millions of years more. This group of organisms is very diverse and contains everything from jawless fish, such as lampreys, to fish with cartilaginous skeletons, such as the sharks and rays, to fish with bones, which consist of basically every other living fish. Today, this group has huge variations in body plans and lifestyles, a huge amount of diversity, and can be found throughout the aquatic environment. This type of fish community was not always present in the waters of the world.
Did you know sharks lay eggs inside them, then the eggs hatch then go to a place to have babies and leave them? The great whites are fabulous creatures but so misunderstood because of myths. People think they're violent but they're actually not and people hunt them. So many sharks are killed in the world for resources and this is how they're getting endangered. The sharks have a major role in the ocean and people do not know that's why we have to save sharks.
Zebras are very closely related to donkeys and horses. Zebras are herbivores and mainly eat grass, shrubs, herbs, twigs, leaves and bark. There are about 750,000 number of zebras overall. In the past, there was about 15,000 Grevy’s Zebras, but sadly only 2,500 remain today. There are about 700 Cape Mountain Zebras and around “800-1300 Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras” alive.
They are very unique in many different ways and a crucial support for human life. They play also a very important role in the marine life such as giving shelter and food for millions of species including fishes, crabs, or shrimps. They support 33% of marine fish species. They also have specific and certain conditions to be formed, and to survive. They are also known as the “rainforest of the oceans” because of its huge diversity.
