Within the world of music, the culture of this art has evolved into being is mainly fixated mainly on specific genres and artists, some being more popular than others. Musicians were known for their best selling singles or their meaningful lyrics, however, few were recognized for their personality and/or journey to success.. Lyrics have been written, songs have been sung, and identities have been created and further developed. Music has existed for thousands of years with connections to the belief that that lyrics can instigate the behaviors and actions of an individual. Angela Barnett, Bowie’s first wife, assisted with the creation of one of his biggest characters, Ziggy Stardust. The name itself was inspired by the 1960’s psychobilly musician, Legendary Stardust Cowboy but the inspiration of this character was based on the English singer, Vince Taylor, who possessed the “rockstar” persona at its finest. He slowly became an omnisexual alien rock star whose general story was that humanity was in its final years of existence. This character was, not only, based on the influence that his wife had on his music career, but rather a method of dealing with his health issues and drug addiction. With the hospitalization of his older brother, Terry, Bowie often transformed into this character as a way to prevent him from going crazy (SongFacts). This Ziggy Stardust character has impacted his identity greatly during this time, acting as a mechanism for conformity. He was described as wild and self-indulgent, yet, the foundation of his personality expressed tenderness and neutrality. Aside from the character of Ziggy, the song itself is based around the idea of self-infatuation; “ultimate rock superstar destroyed by the fanaticism he creates” (SongFacts). In a Rolling Stones interview, Bowie explains that the true meaning of this song spoke about a spaceman coming down to rescue Earth with Ziggy thinking of himself as a prophet of the future. He is not purely just a rockstar, he influenced more musical genres than any other musician, living or dead, being the most influential rockstar yet. His death was not all that simple, Bowie has been battling cancer for six months prior to the recording of Blackstar (Light). As time passed, his physical appearance began to fade, making it evident of his illness, this, however, did not stop him from having the bright personality that allowed him to further amp up his characters. Initially, there was more to the album Blackstar that regarded his death; the artwork alluded to the concept of mortality. The idea of mortality was apparent within this album: the big bang, the beginning of the universe, the end of the universe, and so on. Prior to the music video for Blackstar, Bowie was no longer receiving treatment for his cancer. He was soon realizing that his lifelong dream to produce singles was slowly cascading away, giving him a sense of urgency to accomplish more in his career.
