Zitkala-Sa a Native American activist who fought against white American. In her fiction story Zitkala-Sa uses her personal perspective; to display the struggles between Native American and whites. In ‘’ impressions of an Indian childhood’’, she portrays the changes of their language whose the white man forced Native American to speak, being taken away from her mother which depicts families torn apart in this struggle and being isolated from her cultural roots, which many Native American experienced in order to assimilate white American culture. Traditional beliefs are very important because they contribute to people’s differences. Zitkala-Sa identity was taken away from her; she fought to defend her Identity from the Civilization of the whites Americans. According to the text, she said “No, I will not submit! I will struggle first!’’ (Zitkala-Sa,p 2). Having long and extensive hair was a big part for the Indian girls; it represents part of who they were. The school administration didn’t take the time to fully understand the reason behind the hair; and why Zitkala-Sa refused to let them touch it. they should have taken the time to study their culture. Rules are often made to be broken it can sometimes mislead to serious consequence. In the text, Zitkala-Sa had no admiration for the instructions she didn’t follow them because when she was disciplined in the kitchen, ‘’she says that her punishment was because she had disregarded rules, which she had found binding’’ (Zitkala-Sa, p 5).
