Suppose an orphaned boy is stuck in an orphanage. He is alone with no one to help him become an adult and guide him through his early stages in life. There is another boy who has lived in a comfortable home with parents who help him with his daily struggles. Who will make the transition to adulthood smoother? Coming of Age is gaining responsibility. Becoming your own person. Coming of Age means being mature enough to handle yourself and your own role in society. Coming of Age is an achievement all people must do at some point in their lives. Zits is a teenager with acne problems. He is left alone with no parents at the age of six. Zits bounces around between schools and orphanages for most of his life. He lacks a strong role model to help him, so Zits become rebellious in his life. Before he shoots up a bank to try and bring his parents back to life, he travels through time and lives through various times in his family’s history. He learns more about his Indian roots, going to the 1970s, 1920s, 1870s, and the 2000s. When he returns to the present, he makes his life better because of his experiences and is more in control of his life. To begin, Zits was abandoned by his dad, and his loving mother died at his young age of 6. He does not know what to do with his life without his parents. The author explained his parent’s lives here, “He vanished like a cruel magician about two minutes after I was born. My mother died of breast cancer when I was six. I remember a few things about her” (Alexie 5). Zits’ parents are not a part of his life, and are unable to lead him into a good path for his future. This hurts him when he is alone, with no guidance, and must come of age. He is unable to gain responsibility because he does not have a mentor to show him how to handle the responsibility. Without a role model, the boys on the island could not cooperate, Zits could not handle his misfortune, and Simon and Baz were unable to realize their full powers. Coming of Age is more meaningful when there is someone else there to appreciate it. That orphaned boy was adopted eventually. He connected with his new family. He can now Come of Age with a support system created around him. He will Come of Age in a quicker and more effective manner than if he wasn’t adopted. More kids who have homes to live in will create a better future for the whole
