When Karski spoke in the United States – which he did a great deal both before and after meeting President Roosevelt – he already knew that Zygelbojm had committed suicide. The extreme veracity of his report may have also been a way to answer Zygelbojm’s quest and ease the sense of guilt he had about his death. Even Zygelbojm knew a great deal but what Karski had to say was even worse. He described Zygelbojm listening to him and doing “something like disintegrating… Apparently he did not see himself what I saw.”1 That was why, during the shooting of the film Shoah, Karski cried he “disintegrated” like Zygelbojm did in 1943. That may also be taken as a signal of trauma or survivor’s guilt.21
