3. Relieving spasm In treating spasm seen in epilepsy or chronic infantile con- vulsion, the drug can be used in combination with Rhizoma Gastrodiae, Scorpio, etc. According to modern research on anesthesia by traditional Chinese drugs, this drug is used as the main drug used in anesthe- sia, which is made into injection together with Radix Aconiti, Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii, Radix Stephamae Tetrandrae, etc. Dosage and Administration: When used for oral administra- tion, 0.3 g of the drug is used in decoction. When used for smok- ing, 0.6—1 g of the drug is used. Proper amount of the drug can also be used in external treatment. Notes: This drug is contraindicated for those with cough due to invasion by exopathogen, glaucoma and hypertensicn. Also, sifice this drug has powerful toxic effect, special attention should be paid to dosage to avoid poisoning. 13.2 Drugs for Clearing Away Heat and Resolving Heat—phlegm This kind of drugs are mostly cold in nature with the func- tion of clearing away heat and resolving heat—phlegm. They can be used to treat cough with sticky and foul sputum, difficulty in expectoration, epilepsy, convulsion, scrofula, multiple abscess, etc., and are often used in combination with drugs for clearing away heat. Generally, drugs in this kind are mostly mild in their actions, except Lapis Chloriti or Lapis Micae Aureus, which is rather drastic. This kind of drugs should not be used by those with cold—phlegm and deficiency of the spleen and stomach. - 371
Platycodon Root (F518 Jiegeng) Radix Platycodi This drug consists of the root of the perennial herbage platycodaon grandiflorum (Jacg.) A. DC. (family Campanulaceae).The crude drug is cut into slices for medication. Nomenclature Used in Prescriptions: Jiegeng, Kujiegeng, Baijiegeng Properties and Channel Distribution: This drug is pungent and bitter in taste and neutral in nature, and is distributed to the Lung Channel. Action and Indications: 1. Promoting the lung’s dispersing function and dispelling phlegm This drug has both the ascending and discending functions and can be used effectively to dissipate and elevate the lung—Qi and comfort the chest and diaphragm. It also has desirable func- tion of dispelling phlegm. It can be used to treat cough with pro- fuse sputum, whether the disease is due to cold or heat in the lung. In treating cough with sticky sputum difficult to be expectorated due to heat in the lung, the drug can be used in combination with Folium Mori, Semen Armeniacac Amarum, Folium Eriobotryae, Herba Menthae, Radix Glycyrrhizae, etc. In treating cough with thin sputum and rupning nose due to wind—cold, the drug can be used in combination with Folium Perillae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Rhizoma Pinelliae, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Rhizoma Cynanchi Stauntonii, Radix Glycyrrhizae, etc. In treating sore throat due to failure of - 372 -
