INTRO to Crime & DeviancePART A:Briefly describe what you learned from the TED Talkabout McCarthyism in the space below.McCarthyism was created by Senator Joseph McCarthy when he tried to expose suspected communists that were part of various areas of the U.S. government. People were worried about the influence of communist and Soviet influence on American institutions and this fear spread when domestic communism became viewed as a threat to national security. McCarthy responded to this by publicly accusing government employees of political disloyalty without having any substantial evidence to back up his claims. This led to many innocent people losing their jobs and it caused significant harm to democratic institutions in general. McCarthyism finally came to an end when he turned to the Army and he was finally discredited and censured for his conduct by the Senate. Even though it eventually came to an end and McCarthy ended up dying, the negative consequences have had long-lasting effects.PART B: Our next unit is on Crime & Deviance. What themes or messages about crime and deviance do you believe the movie ‘Zootopia’ was trying to portray? Do you think the movie was effective in conveying those messages? Explain. Use the space below to record your thoughts in at least 4- 5 sentencesin length.I believe that the movie ‘Zootopia’ was trying to portray messages about the discrimination and unjust system that exists in crime and deviance. The movie demonstrated how easily people can generalize an entire group of people from what some people in that group have done. This is a majorcritique on the racial tensions that exist in the U.S. and how those lead to unequal treatment within the criminal justice system. I think that the movie was effective in conveying this message because it showed how it was wrong for people to think so negatively of one group of people based on one bad event and that the cruel treatment they received for it was unfair.
