What are your thoughts concerning the theories presented this week? What aspects of the theories resonate or make more sense to your personal style of counseling? What aspects or concepts within these theories do you think would be a challenge for you, and why?Experiential and humanistic theoriesCarl WhitakerCarl Whitaker’s approach to family counseling is influenced by psychoanalytic and existential models of psychotherapy. Within his theory heincludes symbolism and metaphor, symbolic language, battle for structure, freedom, craziness, and flight into health. His main goal was/is to increase family anxiety to promote family unity and to increase family unity and cohesiveness. This theory also includes cultivating a sense of belonging among family members and promoting individuality and self-actualization among the family members (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2021).Aspects and Challenges of WhitakerWhen thinking of the aspects of Whitaker’s theory I feel I resonate with the symbolism, metaphors, and the use of symbolic language. For clients this can help them better understand one another through a way that they can easily understand. One challenge that may be hard for me to grasp would bethe flight of health because I don’t fully understand this, I can see that it would be challenging but also a piece of information that may be beneficial to learn more about.Virginia SatirThe theory revolves around the person-centered counseling as well as an emphasis on Maslow’s realization of human potential. The Major constructs revolve around the human potential, self-esteem, and freedom of expression. Her goal with this theory is o include realization of human potential, enhancing the full experience of emotions, interactions, functional communication and adaptive decision -making (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2021).Aspects and Challenges of SatirThe aspects that resonate with me within Satir is the way the major constructs revolve around the human potential, in the way that it helps families achieve meaningful growth by helping each member accomplish four goals: raise self-esteem, become decision-makers, become responsible, and become congruent.Walter KemplerKempler is a person-centered counseling and humanistic counseling approach, it includes positive forward movement towards goals, family unit collaboration to create healing, expanding awareness, and to reunite families
to have full encounters, his goal is to increase a healthy dynamic and promote active engagement in. therapy process (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2021).Aspects and Challenges of KemplerWhat I found resonated with me about Kemplers theory is the increase in a healthy dynamic. To focus on the direct and genuine concerns of the here and now can create an environment for the family to address their concerns and come up with a solution together. I believe a challenge could be resolving the conflict between the family members, without the correct technique or hostility that may come between family members that feel there is no conflict can cause some hardship to navigate conflict resolution.
