/Machining and Manufacturing of Firearms / 1Machining and Manufacturing of Firearms - FTT 231 Machine and Gun Shop SafetyMy outline for workplace safety will include Guidelines, and SOP’s. Everyone must always have a safety first attitude. Personal safety of each employee is this Companies number one requirement and goal. No exceptions will be made. Not following safety guidelines is the precursor to accidents and will be grounds for termination.Firearms: Always treat a firearm as if it were loaded. Firearms must be cleared by two employees before work can be done on that firearm. When in doubt if a firearm is clear, clear the firearm again. No magazines or ammunition will be allowed in the work area when working on a firearm. No exceptions.Personal Attire: All employees must wear the proper clothing in this shop. Steel toed boots are required. No loose fitting shirts or pants are allowed. Tight long sleeve shirts are preferred. No baggy pants are allowed in the workplace. Shirts will be tucked in and buttoned up while on the shop floor. No dresses are allowed on the shop floor. No open toed shoes are allowed in the shop. PPE will include safety glasses, Hard hat, hearing protection, gloves, face shields and respirators when around chemicals, vapors or large amounts of dust. Long hair must be pulled back and secured, beards must be trimmed or employee must be clean shaven. A shop apron will be provided and must beworn at all times while on the shop floor. There will be no food or drinks allowed on the shop floor. All food and drinks will be consumed in the breakroom.Shop layout: All machinery must be a minimum of 6 feet from each other to allow space for an employee to work safely. All safety equipment must be marked, labeled and visible to all employees at all times. Evacuation routes must be marked and visible at all entrances to the shop. Any and all chemicals will be used only in clearly marked areas, and ventilation equipment will be used at all times. Respirators must be used when handling or working aroundany and all chemicals.Lighting: All lights must be on and fully operational each day. No work may start until any discrepancies are corrected. Failure to keep a well-lit work space, can lead to accidental injury or death. There will be no exceptions to this rule.Cleanliness: The shop must be maintained and clean at all times. Accumulation of waste materials must be removed as soon as possible and disposed of in its proper containers. Each container will be marked with its corresponding material. Dust and chip collection must be done and verified by a supervisor before end of shift. Training: All new employees regardless of prior skill and training will be required to undergo 20 hours of direct supervision from the lead machinist before working on their own. All training must be signed off by the lead machinist. Annual training must be completed within 10 days before expiration before an employee can continue to work on the shop floor. All employees shall have first aid and CPR training to work in this shop. Training will be provided bythe company.Equipment and materials: All employees shall use the buddy system while moving equipment around the shop floor. Always ensure the equipment is stored correctly and securedbefore moving that equipment to another position on the floor. While moving materials aroundthe shop the employee must make sure the material is secure at all times. When moving material longer than 10 feet two employees must be used to move that material. Always use the correct and proper equipment when transporting materials to and from the shop floor. Only approved equipment may be used to transport material to and from the shop floor. All equipment must have proper ventilation when being operated.Machinery adjustments: All machinery will be brought to a complete stop before an employee can make any adjustments to the machine or the material being used. All material must be completely secured in the machine before operation starts, and the proper holder for the material being used must be utilized for each type of material being used. All machinery willbe shut down and completely cleared of any waste or materials at end of shift.Customers will never be allowed on the shop floor. Family, pets, friends will never be allowed on the shop floor. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Cell phones are not allowed on the shop floor at any time. And remember, Safety always, and Be Your Brother’s Keeper.
