Properties and Channel Distribution: This drug is salty in taste and cold in nature, and is distributed to the Liver and Lung Channels. Action and Indications: 1. Calming the liver and suppressing Yang hyperactivity In treating dizziness, vexation, insomnia and ascending of liver—Yang due to deficiency of Yin, the drug is often used in combination with Concha Ostreae, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix Rehmanniae, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, Flos Chrysanthemi, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, etc. 2. Removing nebula to improve visual acuity In treating nebula, optic atrophy, night blindness and conjunctival congestion with swelling and pain due to liver—heat, the drug can be used in combination with Flos Chrysanthemi, Flos Eriocauli, Periostracum Serpentis, etc. Another method of treatment of optic atrophy is putting the drug powder into the sheep liver, binding the liver with thread, cooking the liver in a clay pot and:eating the liver every day (10 g of the drug at a time). Dosage and Administration: Usually, 10~30 g of the drug is used in decoction and the drug should be decocted longer than other drugs. Notes: This drug should be used with care by those with defi- ciency of the spleen—Yang due to invasion of cold, indigestion and achlorhydria. Oyster Shell (L4 Muli) Concha Ostreae This drug consists of the shell of Ostrea gigas Thunb. and O. - 411 -

talienwhanensis crosse or O. ri—vularis Gould, etc. (family Ostreidae). The shell is broken into pieces and the crude or calcined drug is used. Nomenclature Used in Prescriptions: Shengmuli, Duanmuli Properties and Channel Distribution: This drug is salty and puckery in taste and slightly cold in nature, and is distributed to the Liver and Kidney Channels. Action and Indications: 1. Calming the liver and suppressing Yang hyperactivity In treating headache, dizziness, tinnitus, numbness of the limbs, etc. due to deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of yang, the drug is often used in combination with Os Draconis, Ochra, Plastrum Testudinis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, etc. 2. Inducing tranquilization to calm the mind In treating palpitation, fear, terror, vexation, insomnia, etc. due to deficiency of the liver—Yin, the drug is often used in com- bination with drugs for calming the mind such as Os Draconis, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, Radix Polygalae, Caulis Polygoni Multiflori, etc. 3. Inducing astringency and arrésting discharge In treating afternoon fever, night sweating and spontaneous sweating seen in tuberculosis, 30 g of the drug can be decocted and taken orally. In treating seminal emission and spermatorrhea, the drug can be used in combination with Stamen Nélumbinis, Semen Euryales, etc. In treating metrorrhagia, metrostaxis and leukorrhea, the drug can be used in combination with Colla Corii Asini, Halloysitum Rubrum, Radix Dipsaci, etc. 4.
