ACTIVITY 3: TEXT ANALYSISDirections: Analyze the text below and complete the questions that follow.THE HAITIAN REVOLUTIONHaiti was originally a French colony called Saint Domingue and it was the mostproductive colony in the world. Work was done by thousands of slaves that the Frenchhad imported there to export (sell to other countries) sugar and coffee. Causes forrevolution stem from the drastic (immense/strong) sense of inequality on the island.Slaves made up 90% of the population yet were oppressed on a daily basis by a systemthat generated money for another country. In 1789, revolution broke out in France and the French eventually abolished themedieval feudal system (called the Estates System) governed by absolute authority. Then, they drafted a document called the Declaration of the Rights of Man andCitizen, which guaranteed basic rights to all people of France regardless of wealth. When Haitians found out about this and realized that they weren't included, theywere infuriated and began to revolt. As Robespierre's Reign of Terror consumed most of France's attention in Europe,TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE assumed leadership of the Haitian Rebellion. Problems wereultimately made worse by Napoleon's desperate need for money to fund theNapoleonic Wars in Europe a few years later, for which he saw slave labor as theeasiest solution. After leading an invasion, Napoleon's forces lost against the Haitians.Haiti officially declared itself a Republic in 1804 and finally abolished slavery. Manywhite slave-owners were subsequently tortured and massacred. The revolution represented the largest slave uprising since Spartacus' unsuccessfulrevolt against the ancient Roman Republic nearly 1,900 years earlier, and challengedlong-held European beliefs about alleged racial inferiority and about enslaved persons'ability to achieve and maintain their own freedom. For these reasons, news of thesuccessful Haitian Revolution was largely kept out of American news.SOURCE: n Franklin W. Knight (February 2000). "The Haitian Revolution".
