Mental Health OneIn Class Assignment 31.Look at the chart you just created. What do you believe was the most significant risk and protective factor? Why?I think the strongest risk factor for August is his social isolation because it limits his opportunities to connect and learn about resilience. Isolation in a child can provoke worsening feelings of loneliness, leaving him feeling weighed down when he is struggling to cope. On the other hand, the strongest protective factor I see is that of his relationship with Romelo. This is assisted by Romelo, who helps August befriend others and pursue a passion for music, thereby helping August find balance through connection with a caring adult.2.What was the impact of August’s mom allowing him to stay home all the time? Why do you think she decided to keep him home? For me, keeping August home allows him to feel secure but leads him into a lot ofisolation. His mom probably had this done protecting him from the trauma he had alreadygone through. She intended to protect him; restricting him from socializing and developing himself weakened his potential over time.3.Consider the following quote "Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story" by Josh Shipp which is based on his own experiences but was also backed up by research from Harvard where they found "Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship witha supportive adult".Share your thoughts about how this is relevant to the life of August. To me, this quote really finds itself in the life of August. The stability and encouragement of Romelo get him back into the groove, give him his confidence back, and propel him forward to being in the world again. I feel for young people and youth who have things deeper in their lives, it is important to have a stable, strong adult guidingthem. Romelo is an example of this in August's life and shows how the care and mentoring of one person make all the difference.
Mental Health OneIn Class Assignment 34.When August says, "I just want to be normal" what does he mean?August's statement indicates his need for something social and a sense of belonging, something to be part of a collective unit. He wants to experience all those things taken for grantedat that age: friends, schools, and life outside of trauma and isolation. It is a desire to be accepted and incorporated into the world.5.Do you agree with Romelo's perception of August? "He needs friends; he needsa purpose". Explain why or why not. How does this coincide with the idea of risk and protective factors?6.Yes, I agree with Romelo's perception. For August, friends and purpose are very important protective factors because they can be used to counteract his feelings of isolation and loneliness. Providing social support or a sense of belonging, friends can help him find his way again because they can give him motivation and direction through his purpose. ALL these matters will be substantially important in helping him build resilience and eventually lead him to a healthy life filled with success.
