Discussion Thread: Forming a Growth Mindset for Learning StatisticsA person's "mindset" can be described by Professor Carol Dweck as "their style of thinking about one's aptitude and talent" (Spencer, 2017). A growth mentality is one that anticipates and embraces future challenges as opportunities for personal and professional development. Having a growth mindset means you see setbacks not as the end all be all, but as opportunities to learn and improve. Most striking to me was the following: "I do not have enoughbrains to get through statistics." Since it is final and leaves no room for further development, progress, or growth, it is framed within a set mind. I can relate to this statement because I've never taken a statistics class and was completely unaware of the SPSS program when I enrolled in this course. I finally passed a math class after putting in a lot of time and effort and seeing a tutor because I've never been good with numbers. Besides the expected use of graphs and numerical analysis, I was completely unprepared for this lesson. To say I was initially overwhelmed is an understatement. Upon reviewing the required chapters and corresponding video lectures, I immediately saw that this math curriculum is distinct from others I have come across. My ability to have an open mind and absorb new information in class has greatly improved because of this. According to 2 Timothy 1:7, "For Godgave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." Our existence was not meant to be consumed by perpetual fear and unease. God promises that we are strong, loving, and self-disciplined, and that we have the power to choose and embrace our current mindset and perspective. I keep that in mind whenever I read this poem. Perhaps I will tell myself that I can choose to have a growth mindset, and that this will give me the strength to keep going when the going gets tough in this class.
