Tips for Using Turabian Notes-Bibliography Formatting Turabian Footnote Requirement:While Liberty allows the use of the author-date parenthetical citation formatting for book reviews, footnote citations, also called Turabian Notes-Bibliography Style Formatting (seeTurabian Writing Guide: Footnotes1and Chart of Citations2), should be used for all other written assignments.Footnote Placement: Footnote numbers must be placed after the quotation mark for the borrowed quote or at the end of a sentence that includes borrowed content that has been paraphrased. The footnote numbering must begin with the number 1 and the number placed by the borrowed content and the number placed by the footnote, which is to be placed at the bottom of the page where the source is used, must match3. Each footnote number should only be used once; do not use a number for multiple footnotes even if it is associated with the same source. How to Insert a Footnote in Word: When inserting a footnote into your document, be sure to use the footnote feature. To do this in Word, click on the References tabat the top of the Word document and click on Insert Footnote where you wish to insert the number for the footnote (typically after the closed quotation mark following a quote). This will add the number for you automatically and then you can add the source citation information at the bottom of the page in the space that appears when the number is automatically added at the bottom of the page where the borrowed material is used. This feature will enable the document to track the numbering automatically and it also ensures that the source citation is placed correctly at the bottom of the page where the source content is used. Be sure that the number following the quote and the number in the footnote match. Please use this method when adding footnotes into your papers. Differences Between Formatting of the Bibliography and Footnotes: Please note that formatting and content requirements for the bibliography is different from the content and formatting requirements for footnote citations. Footnote Example:Brian M. Howell and Jenell Paris, Introducing Cultural Anthropology: A Christian Perspective(Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2019), 15. Don’tforget to include the page number where the borrowed content can be located in the original source in the footnote. Bibliography Example:Howell, Brian M., and Jenell Paris. Introducing Cultural Anthropology: A Christian Perspective.Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2019. 1“Turabian Writing Guide: Footnotes,” Jerry Falwell Library, https://libguides.liberty.edu/c.php?g=864199&p=6197236, Accessed March 28, 2024. 2Turabian Chart of Citations,” Jerry Falwell Library, https://www.liberty.edu/casas/academic-success-center/wp-content/uploads/sites/28/2020/03/Turabian-Chart-of-Citations-NB-03282020.pdf, Accessed March 28, 2024. 3This is an example showing the requirement of matching numbers by the footnote and by the sentence that includes this content in the written document. It has been highlighted to draw your attention to this example. Please do not highlight footnotes in your assignments.

Footnote Citation Details: When citing a source for the first time, be sure to include all of the necessary elements for the source, including a page number where the content can be located.4See Howell and Paris textbook citation in footnote 4 at the bottom of this page. As you continue writing, if you happen to use content from the same page in the same sourceas the previous footnote and you are adding the borrowed content on the same written page, use Ibid.5See footnote 5.If the borrowed material comes from the same source but is located on a different pagein the source, use the abbreviation Ibid. followed by a comma and then the new page number6See footnote 6. oMore details on how to use Ibid.can be found on page 2 (page number is listed at the bottom of the pages included here: https://rise.articulate.com/share/er1g36fWyDNZkE3q1GA6CLbk3rQSmUiQ#/lessons/-62bI6_vEnA1uvcRsCUtYKNZLunlG7QD .7NewPage Citations and Shortened Footnote Citations: When inserting a footnote citation on the second page and any other new page and it is the first footnote on the new page, you do not need a full citation again for the same source used on the previous page. Instead use a shortened citationwhich includes the author’sor authors’last name(s), an abbreviated version of the book title (four words or less), and a page number.8See footnote 8.oIf you use that source again on the same new page of the paper and it comes from the same source page, use Ibid. as seen infootnote 5.oRemember to include the page number if the quote comes from a different source page as seen infootnote 6.EXAMPLES: How do I cite the lectures?Note that the author for the PowerPoint lectures is Aura Donaldson. Footnote Example:Melody Harper, Worldview(video lecture in GLST 290 at Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA, Date you accessed the lecture). Bibliography Example:Harper, Melody. Worldview.Video Lecture in GLST 290 at Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA, Date you accessed the lecture. 4Brian M. Howell and Jenell Paris, Introducing Cultural Anthropology: A Christian Perspective(Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2019), 15. 5Ibid. (Ibid. should be used for a quote that is borrowed from the same page as a source already noted on this page: this means that this footnote would reference a quote from Howell and Paris page 15). 6Ibid., 17. (Ibid. and the page number should be used when a borrowed quote is used on the same written page as the footnotes referencing previous quotes and the quote comes from the same source but a different page than previous quotes: this means this footnote is referencing Howell and Paris but different page than original Howell and Paris footnote; be sure to include the new page number) 7“Turabian-Based Interactive Writing Guide,” Jerry Falwell Library, https://rise.articulate.com/share/er1g36fWyDNZkE3q1GA6CLbk3rQSmUiQ#/lessons/-62bI6_vEnA1uvcRsCUtYKNZLunlG7QD, Accessed May 17, 2022. 8Howell and Paris, Introducing Cultural Anthropology, 20. (this shortened citation should be used when moving to a new page of your written paper when a new footnote list is started on the new page, but the full citation was already included previously: author's last name, shortened title, page number)

How do I cite content from the Ethnographic Interview? Footnote Example:First name and last name of the interviewee, Interviewed by your first and last name, City and state where the interview took place, Date of the interview. Bibliography Example:According to new Turabian Formatting requirements, unpublished interviews (including ones you have personally conducted) should be cited only in the notes; omit from the bibliography.” 9What if the page numbers are not listed in the online textbook? The online reader does not always include page numbers for all textbooks. Because some versions of the online textbook reader do not include page numbers for Elmer's book, you may use the chapter number and chapter title, which can typically be found at the top of the page in the online reader, in the spot where the page number would typically go in the footnote. If your version of Elmer does include page numbers, please use the page numbers. See the example below: Footnote Example for a textbook that does not list page numbers:Duane Elmer, Cross-Cultural Servanthood: Serving the World in Christlike Humility (Downers Grove, IL: Intervarsity Press, 2006), Chapter 4: Openness.
