Opposing SideThere are many people who think ethnicity has nothing to do with police brutality. In fact, most of those people believe that police officers take appropriate measures to subdue a suspect. They are confident that if people of color did what officers told them, then they wouldn’t be assaulted or killed.My SidePolice use unnecessary excessive force in their encounters with minority civilians. In the United States, data indicates that Black, Indigenous, and Latinx people, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and homeless and disviolence.Black victims of police killings were 60 percent less likely to exhibit mental illness and 23 percent less likely to carry a weapon than whitevictims were 45 percent less likely to carry a weapon than their white counterparts.Repeated studies have shown that African Americans, Latinos, and other people of color are no more likely, and very often less likely, to bShared groundsOne of the great things about America is our judicial system. When police officers take it upon themselves to act as judge, jury, and sometimes executioner they are undermining the laws we have in plain our country. Holding police officers personally and financially accountable for their actions solves several problems. First, it frees taxpaythat result from police officers’ wrongdoings. Second, it would act as a motivation for officers to uphold the oath they take and encourage bimportantly, police officers performing their jobs unbiasedly is a great way to start to unite our country.
