Both the 3M coder and the ICD-10-CM have the same code. No, I wouldn’t code the left upper flank pain because it’s only a complaint from the patient. It doesn’t have to be coded separately because the complaints are integral to the disease that the patient is already experiencing. In this case scenario I wouldn’t code this because it doesn’t affect thepatient personally or her care. The coding guideline says to report extra diagnoses when It’s relating to or affecting the care of the patient. In Betty’s case it doesn’t affect her.
