Demographics and needs vary from state to state and district to district. Research the trends and prevalence of disability categories being served in your state and describe them to the class. Explain where you located this information and discuss what you can conclude about the needs of students in your state based upon this information. Explain how knowing this type of information can help you plan instruction to maximize the learning of all students. In replies to peers, discuss trends, or lack of trends, in the types of disability prevalence and explain why you think these similarities/differences occur from state to state. What I found interesting is during my research very little information has popped upregarding Alaska. When looking at disabilities I found that a great deal of information is based on the NAEP. This is known as “The National Assessment of Educational Progress” which is utilized in grade 4thand 8thto measure those who areproficient in math and reading. According to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, students within the disability categories have a, “88.17%” attendance rate, “56.90%” graduation rate, “5.49%” dropout rate (2023). Looking at these statistics and those based on reading and math proficiency, one can tell that it is rather difficult for students that fit into this category. Living here in the small village of Kake, AK I have seen firsthand that on these islands with small villages they have a hard time finding Special Education teachers. Along with this piece of knowledge I have determined that while the attendance rate is rather high the focus on students with disabilities falls rather short preventing graduation. “Statewide - State Report Card to the Public - DEED.” Education.alaska.gov, education.alaska.gov/compass/Report/2022-2023#overview.
