September 27th, 2024CHEM 2210: Lecture 9THEME 2: GROUND LEVEL AIR POLLUTIONLook into government report: stateofglobalair.orgCanada’s air pollutant emissions inventory reportSince 2021, air pollution is in second place for global risk factors for death- it is immediately related to risk for human health.Air at ground level:-There are many source of air pollutants (e.g. natural, household, industry, automobile)-Air pollutants contain different types of species, and they have many health implications-Earth’s atmosphere is oxidizing; are gases are eventually fully oxidizedOxidation states:Application:-Predict the chemical property (eg. reactivity, stability) of a compound - Predict the reaction product in a re-dox reaction
Losing of electrons is OXIDIZATIONNH3 for example- H is usually +1, 3(+1)= +3, which means N is -3, because NH3 is neutral.Reduced species don’t stay in this form very long, they eventually turn into their partially oxidized form.
The most abundant storage of these elements are stored in their fully oxidized formCarbon in its fully oxidized form is CO2- cannot lose any more electrons at this point, can also beCO3^2- (not in the form of gas, in the form of a mineral solid)Highest oxygen state for Carbon: 4+, Nitrogen: 5+, Sulfur: 6+
Ground levelozone isresponsible for theformation of thehydroxyl radical-but UV light isrequired for itsproduction. Two conditions,therefore:1)Ozone ispresent2)UV light ispresent
What is the source of ground-level ozone?During daytime, if there is NO2, there will be ozone
To understand increase in ozone concentration, we need to look at sources of NO2- production, factories, etc.
