A time I took the initiative and decided to act without being asked todo so bymanagement, was when I worked at a company called Lydall Thermal Acoustical Group.Where we made heat shields, and sound barriers for automobiles. I was faced with twojobs numbers to be completed by the end of shift, and the tool in my machine was the toolfor the second job, not my priority job. I had to come up with a solution to needing enoughtime to get both completed in one shift. Lydall has these big cut press machines that can cut through our products, and aidein our production routine. When we change job numbers, maintenance must do what wecall a tool change, it takes over 2 hours to complete one change over. This does cut into ourproduction time and deadlines. That night, I had a job that was priority with an order for 350parts that needed to be shipped out to the warehouse by the end of my nightshift, also hadanother order that needed around that many parts as well that had to go out first. Both withproduction times that would take the whole shift to run, and only one machine to run themwas going to be my issue. Making it impossible for me to get both jobs out onthe samenight. When I got to the machine, I seen the wrong tool was in the machine for the job that had to go out first. Instead of calling maintenance to come change out the tools, and lose
two hours of production time, I asked them to bring the other tool and put it in the machineacross from me so I could run both lines at one time. Normally, that is not procedure, dueto many complications and only having one operator. But without being asked I wentaround the whole plant and found all the workers whose lines were either down or oneswho just had no work. I was able to recruit enough of them to come work on my second linewillingly. Then I was able to run both lines and get the parts for both orders out on timesuccessfully.Me taking this initiative on that shift that night without being asked was a good wayfor me to show my leadership skills at work to management. One thing I was able to do waswhen I had an issue, with not being able to get the job out in time with only one line, I cameup with a solution on my own. Which, in turn it helped lower labor costs because withthose workers that I was able to recruit were just pushing brooms or standingaround. Theywere running up the labor cost, so it was a win-win. Also, the fact that I was able to get theother workers from those lines to come and work for me on another line, instead of doing what they were doing at the time, which was getting paid for standing around, shows that Ihad a good repour with the other workers around me, and they liked me because they
were willing to come to help me get a task completed. I was told by my manager that intime, I could be up for a promotion if I was able to keep up that level of work ethics.
