If a child asks Carol Dweck: “Am | smart?”, what might she say? - You become “smart” by sticking with things and persevering in the face of obstacles Why is praising effort not always a good idea? - Misguided, thoughtless effort alone can be ineffective and unworthy of praise - This is why some guidance is necessary for most education. If a child puts effort into their essay by rewriting it a thousand times, but never put effort into reading anything else, then the effort is misguided. Carol Dweck says we should praise a child’s ‘process’. What does she mean by ‘process’ ? - How the child approached the task: their strategy, focus and resilience - If a child is cunning, inventive and lazy, so seeks out the strategy that gets them the best outcome with minimal effort, but then also doesn’t give up when it all fails, they have a good process.
