Saturn’s Death Star MoonFor this art project, I used a combination of colored pencil and marker as my medium. This allowed me to get the shading and pops of color that I wanted for the rigid raggedy mountains and the dark sky. My central themes and subjects for this work include Saturn depicted from Mimas, mountains on Mimas, and an acidic waterfall. In order to depict this image I did some very elementary research. I knew I wanted to depict Saturn because I find the rings extremely beautiful. I also really wanted to depict some sort of flowing
waterlike feature. Finally I have always loved mountains so I wanted to depict those as well. When looking into the moons of Saturn I ran across Mimas which has a giant impact crater. I referenced images of Mimas upon impact and Saturn featured below. The material in the astronomy lessons so far informed me that Saturn was a gas giant so I knew I did not want to depict the surface and rings of Saturn from Saturn. I also knew that Saturn had many rocky moons for me to choose from. The VR Lab Simulation of the solar system helped me visualize and understand the planets, their proximity to the moons, and I paid special attention to Saturn to help me on this project. When depicting Mimas and Saturn directly after the impact occurred I had to take some creative license as this was not directly photographed and all the existing photographs are mere depictions of what the scene most likely looked like. I took the most creative license with the acidic “waterfall” rolling off the mountains of Mimas as there is no evidence of this occurring. I also took artistic license on the rings of Saturn by depicting them as blue and green even though they are more icy. I did this because of the color changes and reflections that may have occurred upon impact. If I were to modify this work in the future I would try to do it from a different angle. I would include the meteor impacting Mimas instead of the aftermath.
