Work Health and Safety (WHS) Induction GuideWelcome to Your Induction! In our push towards promoting safety within the workplace, this handout offers a brief overviewof Work Health and Safety (WHS) as a new worker. You are welcome to use this guide toquickly review your rights, responsibilities, and how to promote a safe workplace.1.Why WHS Induction MattersOur WHS induction aims to:Educate you about specific rights and responsibilities that you personally and others havefor protection.Inform you about reporting procedures for hazards and incidents.Provide you with the necessary information to reduce the dangers present in theworkplace.Through your active involvement, you help enhance safety and promote well-being at theworkplace.2.Understanding the WHS Legislative FrameworkWHS ActsWHS Act is our core safety act that outlines the obligations of employers and employees toensure workplace safety. Employers must take all reasonable precautions to eradicate or reducehazards, and employees must follow safety measures.WHS RegulationsThese regulations define precise means of performing some tasks (e.g., working with chemicals)and describe essential precautions. For instance, there could be regulatory requirements for someequipment and activity records to be maintained.Codes of PracticeThe Codes of Practice offer procedural information on implementing high standards in WHS. Asa non–legal binding code, safety training is recommended to fulfill safety responsibilities
because it demonstrates known risk management procedures, such as adequately lifting an objectin manual material handling tasks.3.Key Gelos Policies and ProceduresIncident Reporting ProcedureMajor and minor occurrences must be reported immediately to minimize the escalation risk. Thismaintains the workplace's safety since every risk is treated as quickly as it is noticed.Emergency Evacuation PlanUnderstand and practice evacuation procedures, assembly points, and other emergencies. Theseare essential during fire alarms or any other natural disasters, and they should be pinned on thenotice boards and found in the intranets.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Wear the appropriate PPE for the area you are working in (e.g., gloves and goggles). It is alwaysimportant to wear PPE to cover you in case more risk is involved in some tasks.Note:These policies can be found in the organization's manual handbook, the Gelos Enterprisewebsite, the WHS, and the organization notice boards.4.The Importance of Consultation in WHSEngaging the employees formulates the paramount ways of addressing WHS. This way, we lookat the matters or measures of safety and the dangers around us to avoid them so that mishaps donot occur. There is a provision for meetings, surveys, and a safety suggestion box in ourworkplace to foster open feedback. Taking part in WHS discussions ensures all are involved innot taking chances with the WHS and ensuring everyone is safe.5.A Guide to Recognizing and Communicating About RisksExamples of Workplace Hazards:
Chemical Hazards: There is the possibility of exposure to dangerous elements duringtasks like cleaning. Always report any case of chemical spillage or improper storage asthey are hazardous.Ergonomic Hazards: Strains can be caused by the poor setup of workstations or repetitivemovements. Inform the WHS team about any discomfort, and they will evaluate anderadicate ergonomic hazards on your behalf. How to ReportAfter an incident, you should immediately report the case, depending on the organisation'sstandard reporting or to your supervisor.6.Risk Management Process for Hazards. The organisational risk management process aims at stating and managing hazards in a mannerthat will not harm workers. Here's how it works:Identify the Hazard: Identify risks in your workplace.Assess the Risk: Assess the risk of the dangerous factor and their potential impact on theorganization.Control the Risk: Apply appropriate controls, such as:-Elimination: Removing the hazard entirely.-Substitution: Replacing it with a safer one.-Engineering and Administrative Controls: Changing a procedure or introducingmeasures of protection.-PPE: Wear personal protective gear when handling high-risk activities. We aim to leverage the best possible controls that will provide maximum protection. You shouldconsult your supervisor for questions about controlling a particular risk.Key TakeawayIt is essential to state that a clean work environment is everybody's responsibility. By followingthese guidelines, you are helping to make a positive and initiative approach to safety. Thus, safety begins with every one of us!
