Discussion Assignment, Unit 5, HRM CourseBy Ahmed AbdelgawadMay 14, 2024IntroductionThis week, i am discussing Discrimination as one of the most challenging legal issue that might face HR professionals and managers. I will address types of discrimination, mention some discrimination situations, policies to train mangers on to avoid discrimination at organizations and the challenge that may meet this training and how to overcome it.DiscriminationIt is "The intended or accomplished differential treatment of persons or social groups for reasons of certain generalized traits. The targets of discrimination are often minorities, but they may also be majorities, as black people were under apartheid in South Africa. For the most part, discrimination results in some form of harm or disadvantage to the targeted persons or groups." (Salentin, 2024)Types of discriminationDiscrimination can be based on the following:1-RaceReligion-2Colour-3Disability-4Sex-5Marital status -67-AgeExamples of discriminationThe following are some examples of discrimination"1-A bank has lending rules that make it unreasonably difficult for new immigrants to get loans. This may be a case of discrimination based on two grounds — race and national or ethnic origin.2-A person is systematically referred to secondary screening at airports due to the colour of their skin. This may be a case of discrimination based on the ground of colour.
3-An employer’s physical fitness requirements are based on the capabilities of an average 25 year old instead of being based on the actual requirements of the job. This may be a case of discrimination based on the ground of age.4-A female employee with an excellent performance record announces that she is pregnant. Immediately, her employer begins to identify performance issues that lead to her dismissal. This may be a case of discrimination based on the ground of sex" (chrc-ccdp.gc.ca, n.d.)Overcoming discrimination at workHR professional should possess a policy to fight discrimination and the managers should be trained in this field. The following are suggested policies to fight discrimination and to train managers on applying these policies:"1-Conduct a diversity audit.2-Build a diverse workforce.3-Welcome new employees with enhanced onboarding and training.4-Educate employees on inclusive behavior.5-Ensure policies and procedures are inclusive" (Leach, 2021)Challenges meeting training and overcoming itThe challenge that may meet HR professionals to train managers to avoid and deal with discrimination is limited managers' spare time. To overcome this challenge, we have to ensure compliance with the managers so, training may be done using short videos or done online at flexible time that suits managers availability.ConclusionDiscrimination is one of the most challenging legal issue that might face the HR professionalswho have the responsibility to orient and train managers on avoiding and dealing with such issues. Ensuring diversity within the organization, good training, enhanced onboarding are among the most effective policies to fight discrimination. HR professionals might meet many challenges while trying to fight discrimination like managers having no spare time for training and one of the ways to overcome this challenge is providing short videos and remoteonline training.ReferencesLeach, B.( November 15, 2021).How to start to eliminate discrimination and bias in the workplace. www.uboxedtechnology.com. https://unboxedtechnology.com/blog/how-to-overcome-discrimination-in-the-workplace/Salentin, K.(April 29, 2024).discrimination.www.britannica.com. https://www.britannica.com/topic/discrimination-society
