Bridge The Gap
Bridge The Gap
Program Transcript
INSTRUCTIONS
Awareness: Consistently manifest alertness of how personal beliefs, attitudes, values,
and behaviors affect others and/or use sound judgment to properly assess situations.
When a gap exists between how we see ourselves and how others experience us, the
risk for miscommunication and relationship strain increases. Let’s consider how you see
yourself versus how others experience you to discover the gaps.
In the first assessment you consider how you view yourself.
In the second assessment you will respond to how you believe others view you.

Rate the way you view yourself on each item below. Record your responses.

Bridge The Gap
Consider not only your close family and friends, but the grocery store cashier, the server
you had last week at a restaurant, a casual acquaintance, a former friend, a relative you
are no longer close with, etc.
With these perspectives in mind, rate yourself on each item below. Record your
responses.
1 = Others would not view me this way at all.
5 = Others would view me this way.

CALCULATE THE GAP
RESULTS: THE GAP
Review and reflect on the results; pay particularly close attention to the differences in
the scores between your self-assessment and your impression of how others have of
you. That difference is the gap that needs to be bridged.
When our view of ourselves is not consistent with others’ experience of us, we tend to
reject their view and cling to ours rather than open ourselves up to the possibility that
perhaps the experience of others is valid.
When you have reviewed and reflected on the gaps, return to the online classroom to
respond to the prompt.
