WIT - 2 Rhetorical ConceptsIn the “Letters from an American Farmer,” J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur uses parallel structure andrhetorical questions to enhance the persuasiveness of his arguments and appeal. Parallel structuresemphasize the difference between the harsh conditions in Europe and the opportunities in America. Forexample, when he says, “Here man is free as he ought to be; here he is the architect of his fortune,” therepetition of “here” drives home how much better things are in America. This makes his argumentsclearer and more organized for the readers. Rhetorical questions, like when he asks, “What the in theAmerican, this new man?” get readers thinking. It makes us stop and consider what makes Americansunique from everyone else. By using these techniques Crevecoeur makes his arguments more engaginghelping readers to imagine a society that offers freedom and the chance to shape their futures.
