Identify one policy or program that would be relevant to thecircumstances in the case study.Miguel is a 10-year-old Colombian child whose circumstance was discovered by school officials. Due to unkempt appearance, lethargic behavior, weight loss, and clothing, school officials became concerned (Walden, 2022). After meeting with the school social worker, Migueldisclosed that his family has money problems, and he is living in a shed with his mom Luisa and his sister (Walden, 2022). The school met with Luisa who further disclosed domestic violence from her current boyfriend Henry, causing the family to leave and seek safety. Further assessment revealed that the children’s father is deceased and financial dependance on Henry caninfluence Luisa to return home (Walden, 2022). To support Luisa and her family, it is important to connect her to resources enacted by social welfare policies to eliminate financial dependance on Henry. Without Luisa feeling financially dependent, she will be able to raise her family in a healthy and safe environment. A social welfare policy that would benefit Louisa and her family would be the Economic Opportunity Act (Popple & Leighninger, 2019). The goal of this program is to assist poverty-stricken communities towards upward mobility (Popple & Leighninger, 2019). The EOA’s purpose is to provide the opportunity for education and training, the opportunity to work, and theopportunity to live in decency and dignity (Bauer, 2019). Some programs that were created underthe Economic Opportunity act include work experience programs that will provide individuals with payments for experimental, pilot, and demonstration projects to expand opportunities for work experience and needed training of persons who are unable to support or care for themselvesor their families (Pollak, 2018). A paid work program will provide Luisa with stable financial means to support her family. Under the EOA, Luisa can also access urban and rural community action programs. These programs provide financial and technical assistance to public and private nonprofit agencies for community action programs (Pollak, 2018). With the help of the social worker, Luisa can be provided with information about nonprofit programs that can help her financially care for her family. Explain how the perspective you chose (e.g., culture, immigration, geography) informs:oThe perceived need for the policyoThe ability to implement the policy both generally and specifically for the client in the case study. One of the biggest variables to consider when working with Luisa and her family is cultural and immigration barriers. Luisa and her family emigrated from Colombia and is potentially undocumented. Being undocumented can negate the utilization of certain programs related to job training or other welfare benefits. Fortunately, under the Economic Opportunity Act, the federal government funds assistance for migrant agricultural employees. These programsprovide assistance to state and local governments, public and private nonprofit agencies for individuals in operating programs to assist migratory workers and their families with housing, sanitation, education, and day care of children (Pollak, 2018). essential considering that some welfare programs are not available due to legal status. For example, undocumented immigrants are ineligible for programs such as SSI, food stamps and TANF. Under the Economic Opportunity Act, Luisa will be able to still receive assistance for her and her family regardless of legal status. This can also be said the same for families who present with similar obstacles as the requirements for some social welfare policies negate the opportunity for assistance. Bauer, J. E. I hope you had an amazing week and are looking forward to the holiday weekend! You picked the viewpoint of culture in your piece, I briefly reflected on culture but mostly immigration. Because many immigrants will continue to practice their culture in their new surroundings, our viewpoints are similar. You were right to point out that the family’s culture may bring barriers to their environment and the lack of culturally responsive services around them. Social elements have a role in how people perceive the world and whether they will strive for betterment or accept things as they are in their culture (Esses, 2022). Since the family’s immigration, they seem too appeared to be caught between their cultural expectations, mainly the mother Luisa of not being a typical homemaker and her desire to find other answers to her predicament. Immigration and culture impact society's responses to requirements for public policy, not simply how it appears. You are correct the VAWA services are a wonderful resource for this family. I see especially in my area cultural competency is more widespread and there are more services being offered which is nice to see for all individuals. Thank you for sharing your post. Hello Kellie,Thank you for sharing your detailed discussion. I enjoy the references you chose to utilize and the thoughts you put forth through your post. I see that you decided to focus on immigration rather than culture and immigration in your conversation, whereas I chose to focus on both. However, I didn't see anybody really address geography so this is something I will be putting thought into as well tonight. We can agree that since many immigrants will continue to practice traditional aspects of their culture in their new environment, our points of view are similar. We may infer from the instance that Migual’s family’s culture may demand them to uphold the integrity of their family despite the difficulties they encounter. Culture-specific sociocultural factors can have an impact on a person's awareness of the outside world and their propensity to seek improvement or accept things as they are (Esses, 2022). Immigration and culture not only affect how society looks, but they also may have an impact on how society responds to the demands of public policy. Luckily there are services in place for families immigrating to the United States, however it might be a difficult process. I also agree that a social worker can become involved to help the family, especially by advocating on behalf of their needs. I hope youhave a wonderful weekend! ReferencesEsses, V.
