EDSGN 11: HUMANITARIAN ENGINEERING FIRST YEAR SEMINAR Fall 2022 syllabusInstructor Information: Name: Dr. John Gershenson Director, Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE) Program Preferred Pronouns: He, him, his Email: gersh@psu.eduOffice: In the LaunchBox – 123 S. Burrowes Phone: (906) 370-5352 Office Hours: By appointment Class Meeting Time: 3:35PM to 4:25 PM on Tue in Walker 101 Prerequisites: None Class Mode: Live! Course Introduction This First Year Seminar in Humanitarian Engineering will introduce you to Humanitarian Engineering, some of its key elements, and several key Sustainable Development Goals. You will also have the opportunity to delve into some of these on your own through class projects. We will use the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a tool to understand key issues in impact development. We will then look at technologies impacting some of these goals as a means for understanding humanitarian engineering. Students are asked to come to class ready to participate based upon their assignment work, their own personal backgrounds, and their interest in the topics. Course Structure The course will be a fast moving and broad introduction to development impact through humanitarian engineering. Interactive seminars will be interspersed by two design projects. You will spend roughly the first third of the course learning about the UN sustainable development goals, the second third discussing successful engineering solutions to these goals, and the last third considering how to tailor your time at Penn State to prepare yourself to address one of these goals. Design for the Developing World What products have changed the world? More importantly which products have significantly impacted the lives of underserved people in developing communities? Which have done so at a significant scale? We will delve into why products do or do not hit this high bar. Check out some products here: Engineering for Change (engineeringforchange.org) and Appropedia (appropedia.org).

Sustainable Development Goals In 2000, the UN adopted and the G8 helped fund eight Millenium Development Goals for the year 2015. The goals were expanded for 2030 to the Sustainable Development goals. The object is to transform our world into one that is sustainable because, “[w]e don’t have plan B because there is no planet B.” (Ban Ki-moon, 2016). Check out the goals at sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgs and more about the history of the sustainable development goals on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goals. Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1.Explain with appropriate examples the UN Sustainable Development Goals, humanitarian engineering, and development . 2.Identify the relationship between technology and development. 3.Navigate key engineering resources on campus.4.Understand the role of the human at the center of design 5.Understand problem-based self-determined education Student Evaluation / Grading Policy: Item Weightage Final college plan: A collection of courses, activities, and internships that you feel will put you in good shape to be able to work towards a sustainable goal of your choice after your graduate. Bonus points for joining a group and signing up for any course in the fall. 40% Design projects: Day one in class design project – based upon participation Post break team design project – raising happiness – based upon peer review 10% 20% Assignments: For two of the four design for the developing world topics, identify successful products. Each assignment is 500-600 words plus 2 graphics and 2 pictures describing the people impacted, the problem, the product/solution, the impact, and the market. 30% Daily participation: A grade of 0/1/2 will be assigned for each person’s daily participation based upon taking opportunies for informed engagement with the material. Each student must accumulate 10 points to earn a grade of B or better. 0% Total: 100% Class and Team Meetings during COVID-19 The course is a live class. I have an elderly parent that I care for so if the university moves to a masking policy it will be strictly enforced but if you are not feeling well please be masked in class or take the day off.

Academic Integrity Incidents of academic dishonesty will be dealt with according to University policy. The current policy may be found at http://www.psu.edu/dept/oue/aappm/G-9.html Disability Access Penn State welcomes students with disabilities into the University’s educational programs. Every Penn State campus has an office for students with disabilities. Student Disability Resources (SDR) website provides contact information for every Penn State campus (http://equity.psu.edu/sdr/disability-coordinator). For further information, please visit the Student Disability Resources website (http://equity.psu.edu/sdr/). In order to receive consideration for reasonable accommodations, you must contact the appropriate disability services office at the campus where you are officially enrolled, participate in an intake interview, and provide documentation: See documentation guidelines (http://equity.psu.edu/sdr/guidelines). If the documentation supports your request for reasonable accommodations, your campus disability services office will provide you with an accommodation letter. Please share this letter with your instructors and discuss the accommodations with them as early as possible. You must follow this process for every semester that you request accommodations.
