DISCUSS BOTH VIEWSTopic 1: Some people believe that the only purpose of films is to entertain. But others say films should have educational value. Discuss both views and give your opinion.Individuals (Viewers)- most of us consider films as a way to relax -> expect no lessons to gain -> may be annoyed with lessons carelessly includedFamily- Kids movie should have educational values -> Parents and kids watch together -> Parents can use the movie as a way to teach their childrenCompany- focus purely on entertaining -> attract viewers -> higher box office numbers When audiences choose which films they want to watch, they usually pick the most entertaining ones. For example, in the 2010s, the top-grossing movies are usually action blockbusters, such as The Fast and Furious, The Avengers, Mission Impossible, etc. Therefore, in order to attract these viewers and earn higher box office numbers, moviemakers should focus purely on making their films as engaging as possible. Company- should have educational values -> make it special -> financial rewards I believe film directors should also include lessons (in their products) as they would make their product special, and eventually provide financial rewards. For example, 'Bo Gia' (Old daddy), earning the highest revenue in Vietnam's cinematic history, was so successful thanks in part to the family values added to the film.Society- a good way to teach young generations about patriotism and family values. (Duoc moi) Aside from making a movie entertaining, writers and directors should try to include important lessons for the young generations. Because film is such a popular medium, when ideas and values, especially those related to patriotism and family values, are woven into the narrative, they can reach a massive audience. For example, some Vietnamese filmmakers have formed a project called “Duoc Mo,i” where they bring Vietnamese history to life through animations, and their short films have reached millions of people, inspiring patriotism among them.
Topic 2:Some people are born to be leaders, others believe leadership can be learned. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.Familyfamily businessEx: It is evident that a number of families have successfully passed their businesses among family members through many generations. Admittedly, their successive generations must have a good formal education, but it cannot eclipse the knowledge imparted by older family members to younger ones on how to lead a huge corporation.Companyfrom business schoolsGreat leaders are often associated with good communicative abilities and good teamwork skills, and these can be learned, particularly from business schools. These universities and institutes train their students in communication and teamwork by having them work on many group projects, which not only hones their business capabilities, but also their cooperativeness. As a result, alumni of such schools are often seen in senior and leadership positions, and most enjoy a moderate level of success. Topic 3: Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that, in today’s world, subjects like Science and Technology are more important than History. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.Individual- equipped with knowledge about S & T -> more likely to get a job after graduation. It is undeniable that technology plays a tremendous role in today’s society, so the most important jobs today are related to its development and application. Because of this, students who specialize in Science and Technology are much more likely to be offered a well-paid job after they graduate than those who major in History.IndividualVo Nguyen Giap // Greta Thunberg // MessiThroughout history, there have been many examples of gifted leaders who, although never formally trained, had the innate ability to command. For instance, Vo Nguyen Giap, an army general of the People’s Army of Vietnam, had been a history teacher and had no military training prior to the Anti-French Resistance War, yet, after leading the army, many considered him one of the greatest military leaders in the 20th century.
Company/SchoolHistory is easier to understand than Science and Technology -> If you need to know about history you can look it up online -> No need for intensive studyMuch more emphasis should be put on Science and Technology as they are very difficult to understand. While history does matter, it can be easily learned through googling, whereas science requires reasoning and careful examination to comprehend. Therefore, more time should be allocated to teaching these subjects so as to make sure that all students understand the course material.Society-History teaches and promotes patriotism.Despite being overlooked by many, History still plays an important role in fostering patriotism. By learning about what their ancestors had sacrificed for their nation, people would be more appreciative of what they have, and, as a result, they would strive to improve and perfect their country. -understand the past, so we don’t make the same mistake again in the future.History is an essential subject that should be mandatory in school, since it provides us with profound knowledge about the past. By examining the root causes of conflicts and wars, we can determine what mistakes were made, so that they may be avoided in the future. Such understanding of history not only helps a country maintain social order, but also allows governments to promote world peace. Germany is a good example of this practice, as the dark history of Nazism is widely taught and heavily criticized in the country, so that they can avoid a repeat of this ideology in the future. - Science and Technology should be given greater emphasis (compared to History) as these subjects will have the potential to enhance the workforce of the whole nation. For example, China, for years, has been focusing intensively on these subjects in their education, and their highly skilled engineers and scientists have contributed significantly to lifting the country out of poverty.Environment- understand our surroundings -> adequately deal with environmental problems (climate change, reaction to diseases)A better understanding of Science and Technology also helps people better understand the world around them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as experts raced to instruct the mass public on how to deal with the dangerous virus, there were a few uneducated people who sought to undermine the preventative measures presented by said professionals. They actively discouraged people from wearing masks and taking the vaccine, and attended mass gatherings without considering the possible effects of such actions. If the education system had properly informed these people on the science of dealing with viruses, perhaps this outbreak of the coronavirus could have been largely mitigated.
Topic 4:In a number of countries, some people think that it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.Individual- much needed for daily commutes (public transport)Inner city travel is a much more pressing need, as millions of urban residents commute to work every day. It is a fact that traffic congestion, which stems from overpopulation, is quickly becoming too much for city infrastructure around the world to handle. Therefore, citizens would see the largest improvement in quality of life were authorities to improve these means of transit. Family- Better public transport -> Faster -> Save time -> Use that time to spend on quality time with family -> Strengthen family bonds (Ý hơi gượng ép một chút nhưng đi thi có vẫn hơn không :P)Society- (in my country Vietnam) public transport -> poorly invested -> not reliable -> not used by the publicImproving public transport should be the priority because it is seriously underdeveloped in some places. Vietnam, for example, is notorious for having uncomfortable buses and a lack of a functional rapid transit system. Because these means of transport are poorly invested in and, as a result, unreliable, the general public tends to prefer private transportation instead, which puts a lot of pressure on the infrastructure in the city. - (railway) -> less time than air travel -> save timeGovernment- (railway) huge investment -> higher tax rates on the citizens.Railway lines are generally quite expensive to build, requiring the government to allocate a lot of its resources to them. Because the government budget is funded by taxpayer money, these projects tend to be very unpopular and difficult to officially sanction. In Vietnam, for example, there was a plan to build a North-South expressway that would have cost over 60 billion USD, and, because of that cost, the National Assembly vetoed it. To get around this lack of support, many countries have opted to borrow funds from other countries; however, this is also problematic. Laos is a good example of predatory lending practices, as, in order to develop its infrastructure, it borrowed a massive amount of money from China, which it could not repay, leading to the Laotian government making political concessions, and bowing down to China.(In VN, the The North–South expressway costing over 60 billion USD were rejected by the National Assembly (expensive -> Need to loan money -> too much money -> Unable to repay the debt -> Country’s economy collapses -> (Laos owes China too much money -> They have to make political concession)
Environment-railway lines -> cut down trees to make way for the railway -> destroy the natural habitats of animals. While new intercity railways could reduce air pollution, their construction would still be very damaging to the environment. This is because railway lines often cut through dense forests and woodland areas, meaning that these trees would need to be chopped down to make way for the tracks. Not only would this destroy the wild habitats, and thereby affect the ecosystem, but noise from the train when it becomes operational would also do harm to the animals living there.-(both) less private vehicles on the road -> reduce air pollution
