Clare ShannonExperiment 1: A Periodic Table of ElementsPurpose/ Objectives:To learn about the chemical and physical characteristics of 12 elements.Experimental MethodsMaterials: TV or monitor to watch videos and something to take notes with. Procedure:1. Watch the videos for elements 1-3 and 6-11 (hydrogen to lithium and then carbonthrough sodium). The helium video can be stopped after 5:20 min. The nitrogen video can be stopped after 5:30 min.2. The TA will help the lab section select three other element videos to watch, first by gathering suggestions and then by voting. Each lab section is likely to choose a different set of videos. You might choose an element that we will learn about in class, such as neodymium (Nd) or niobium (Nb). Or, you might want to suggest one of the more popular videos. The four of the most popular videos are for H, He, O, and F, which you will have already watched. Among the next most popular are K, Cs, Fr, Hg, U, Pu, Fe, Xe, and Pb. Some of these are popular for the demonstrations, while others are popular because they are well-known and/or toxic elements.3. It is advisable to take notes while you watch the videos or else you will have to watch them again later. You will have to perform some investigation after class to find the information regarding properties or everyday use of these elements. Most of this extra-laboratory material can be found in your chemistry textbook.

ResultsIn this experiment I was able to learn a lot about the different elements we watched videos on as well as see experiments done with each one. I learned some of the qualities and reactions caused by these elements. DiscussionA. 1. What does hydrogen react with when it is combusted to create water?Hydrogen reacts with oxygen during combustion to create water.2. Where were large deposits helium first discovered in the US?Large deposits of helium were first discovered in Texas, specifically in the Panhandle region.3. Lithium carbonate is used to treat manic depression. What is lithium’s target in the brain? Lithium’s target in the brain is primarily neurotransmitter systems.4. Name three materials that contain only carbon? Graphite, Diamond, Fullerene. 5. What is the nitrogen compound used in automobile airbags? The nitrogen compound used in automobile airbags is sodium azide.6. What is ozone important in the upper atmosphere? The ozone is important because it protects us from the UV from the sun.7. What makes fluorine so reactive? Fluorine is reactive because it has the highest electronegativity out of the elements.8. What color does neon emit when it is electrified?Neon emits a bright orangish reddish color.9. Sodium is benign in one form but explosive in another. What are these two forms?Sodium’s benign form is sodium chloride and sodium’s explosive form is metallic sodium.

B. In this experiment our goal was to learn about different elements by watching the Periodic Table of Elements videos. We watched elements 1-3 and 6-11 as well as Uranium (U) 92, Gold (Au) 79, and Iodine (I) 53.AcknowledgmentsN/AReferences3. Poliakoff, M.
