Leanie L. Pilongo PSY 324 (9582)FIRST EXAMINATION1. How are theories helpful in our study about teaching and learning? An awareness of all the different learning and teaching theories wouldprobably aid us in our future teaching profession since it would be able to determineeach student's learning style and preferred teaching method. There are clearadvantages if we apply the theories, we learned in psychology in the educationalsettings like in Behaviorism and Social Constructivism because having anunderstanding of these learning theories could be useful in a teacher’s planning sothat we can incorporate activities within our lessons that stimulate and cater for alltypes of learners. Moreover, as a future teacher, I may appreciate the significance ofvarious factors like group work, motivation, and behavior in a student's learningexperience. Just like Bandura and Skinner's theories, which claim that a teacher'sbehavior control tactics (reward and punishment) influence motivation. Knowing howessential motivation is in learning, a teacher may use appropriate strategies toinspire and engage students/pupils in the classroom. We may then strive to considerthese difficulties in our preparation to ensure that students were appropriatelystimulated. However, the fact that each student is unique, providing an ideal lessonthat caters to every single student in the class may be practically impossible.Nevertheless, having a thorough understanding of different theories on how studentslearn may imply that we as future instructors can be better equipped to teach a classand that our students learn more effectively.2. Ms. Ruby teaches ninth-grade English subjects. She gives the class directions fora writing assignment that is to be completed by the end of the period. Rico, one ofher students, is not paying attention and missed the directions. He frequently bothershis classmates by humming, tapping his pen, reminding them of the rules, orspeaking out of turn. He asks for the directions to be repeated. The other students inthe class begin to make fun of Rico and ridicule him for not paying attention onceagain. Ms. Ruby, feelingfrustrated because she is asked to repeat the instructions
once again, continues passing out materials and ignores Rico and the otherstudents.Based on what you’ve learned about the role of teachers and the teaching professionin general, answer the following questions: A.In this scenario, the teacher is confronted with the need to demonstratewhat type of knowledge and skill?Knowledge about learners- Ms. Ruby must confront this kind ofprofessional knowledge because if she wants to become an effectiveteacher, she should require significant knowledge about the variousways on how students think and behave in a classroom depending ontheir unique characteristics. Ms. Ruby should have patience and besensitive to the needs of a student from diverse backgrounds.Communication skills & Classroom Management skills– Ms. Rubymust confront these types of professional skills because it is one of theimportant aspects of an effective teacher. She needs to be a goodverbal and nonverbal communicator, even if one of her students in theclass is obstinate, she should need to be a good verbal and nonverbalcommunicator because sometimes, our nonverbal behavior can causedestructions in the learning attentiveness of the students. Moreover,Ms. Ruby needs to manage their classroom in order to create asuccessful, orderly environment that is pleasant to the learning processof students. B.What possible issues/concerns might this scenario lead to if leftunattended/unresolved by the teacher? One potential difficulty in this situation is that Rico, the student, might feel excluded and ashamed in front of the class. This wouldresult in a lack of learning motivation and, most likely, a resentment ofMs. Ruby, his teacher. It might also have an impact on his relationshipswith his classmates. As a result, he no longer attends classes. Thisissue, however, depends on the student's approach to the situation.
C.What responses/actions will result in a more positive outcomeand/or what proactive measures might be considered? As a future teacher, it is important to have good communicationwith your students. You should have a lot of patience enough to assessyour student's needs and rights. Although we all know that managing aclass with a lot of students can be challenging, keep in mind that inorder to effectively manage your class and be an effective teacher, youmust establish authority by establishing rules and procedures for themto know what they are do’s and Don’ts inside the classroom setting, butdon't forget to build a good rapport. Always remember that when youare in front of your class, you are a step higher than them, so yourstudent must expect something from you in terms of knowledge andbehavior. Therefore, establish yourself as a role model foryour students and don't let negative behavior affects your students’learning process.3. How important it is that we have background knowledge about thedevelopmental processes of an individual, particularly in terms of physical andlanguage development? How will it impact the teaching and learning process? As a future teacher, it is important to have some understanding of anindividual’s developmental process. This will enable us to properly assess whether ornot a person is growing normally, grasp what they are and are not capable of doing, and respond to each individual’s needs and rights. For us to apply the concept ofteaching and learning, we should consider the capabilities of each student for themto learn more effectively. In terms of physical development, we should provideopportunities to the learners to encourage physical activities including team games, motor skills that can be explicitly taught to improve their enjoyment and skills in everyactivity. Also, in terms of language development, teachers can help learners inprogressing their vocabulary by chatting with them and boosting their interest inreading. Teachers can also shape individuals’ consciousness about how languageworks so that they also learn to utilize language more cooperatively, resulting in
connected conversation. They gained the capacity to connect phrases to producelogical imageries, characterizations, and narratives.
