My StoryWhereas obstacles are hard, they can sometimes prove to be stepping stones for ourbiggest successes. A very unwelcome moment in my life emerged when an injuryknocked me off the soccer field for a while-a place where I felt most alive. What I didn'tknow at that time was how this situation would be able to teach me some of the mostimportant lessons about resilience, self-belief, and determination. It all started in one match, during which I was tackled to the ground rather roughly andgot a pain in my ankle that came out of nowhere. The doctor informed me after thecheck-up that I would be out for several weeks, and that hit me pretty hard. Having to siton the bench and watch my teammates play without me was not easy. Soccer was mypassion, my way of getting rid of stress, and my method of self-expression. But themore I sat, the more my confidence in the sport and in myself started to erode.Actually, my confidence was my real challenge in returning from the injury. I wasapprehensive to be released to play for fear I would not perform as well in matches aspreviously or that I would re-injury myself. My coach, pretty careful with me after theinjury, kept me on the bench, and that only added to my self-doubt. Seriously, I began towonder whether I would ever be strong and in love with the game again. But once I reflected on what was going on in my life, I came to an importantconclusion-that this could be my chance to develop, not only as a player, but also as aperson. I had two options: I could let the injury define me, or I could use this time tocome back stronger. I chose the latter. Instead of dwelling on what I couldn't do, I wasable to focus on what I could. Commitment to strengthening not only my ankle but myoverall fitness and skills started to make me train harder-not just physically but mentallytoo. I have worked hard to improve my technique, increase my endurance, and mentallyrehearse successful moments on the field.Slowly but surely, I started to feel like myself again. This time, I felt different; I had a newsense of purpose, not in proving it to any other person but in bringing joy and passionagain. The first time I stepped onto the field, it wasn't about perfection butcelebration-the fact that I was finally able to get through what I thought wasinsurmountable. With every game, I grew in confidence and could play even better than before. I learnedto believe in myself even when it did not occur as well as one could have wished. Mycoach did not fail to notice my determination and finally I got back into the team, but thistime with an attitude changed, not taking anything for granted at every instance ofplaying this sport that I loved so much.
My StoryNow I see my injury in retrospect as less of a setback and more of a turning point in lifethat molded me into what I am today. Of course, I did learn that every challenge isactually an opportunity in disguise and, with the right attitude, we always manage to risefrom any situation stronger, wiser, and more resilient. This experience gave me theconfidence to be prepared for whatever obstacle I may go through, since, in essence,it's not setbacks but our response to them that defines us.
