Guide to the Final*This guide lists major topics that will be assessed during the final. This list is not exhaustive.Anything covered in class is fair game for the final. Approximately 80% of the final will be onCluster B PDs, DBT, & Cluster C PDs. Roughly 20% of the final will be on the IntroductionSections & Cluster A PDs. *In general, for studies covered in the course, know what the studies assessed for and major conclusions. You do not need to know specifics about the demographics or results. Cluster B Personality Disorders (7 lectures) Characteristics, features, psychological testing results (if in slides), comorbidities, & attachment styles of the Cluster B personality disorders (histrionic, borderline, narcissistic, antisocial)Theories underlying the development of the personality disorders For each PD, how to distinguish between a personality style vs. a personality disorder. How to distinguish between the Cluster B PDs and other psychiatric disorders (major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, other personality disorders, etc.)Understand the similarities and differences between the four Cluster B Personality DisordersUnderstand the mechanism of splitting and its relationship with borderline personality disorder The difference between a covert and overt presentation of narcissistic personality disorder. Know the childhood and adolescent precursors to antisocial personality disorder (oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder), the prognosis for these disorders, and treatments available. Know the difference between antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy & psychopathy. Psychotherapy & medication treatments for the 4 Cluster B Personality Disorders Dialectical Behavior Therapy (2 lectures)Know the 4 modules of Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation,Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal EffectivenessUnderstand the biosocial theory of emotional regulation Understand what is a dialect Know the components of the Model of Emotions How to distinguish between a judgmental and non-judgmental thought Understand when to utilize emotion regulation skills vs. distress tolerance skills
