What Inspires You?The definition of inspiration as defined by Websters Dictionary is: “the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.” (Merriam-Webster. (n.d.). )When I think about what inspires me my three children come to mind, and the type of world I want them to grow up in and live in when they are adults and I am no longer here to guide them and take care of them. Out of all the grand challenges of social work that inspires me that I believe could make a better world for my three children is: Reducing Extreme Economic Inequality. My presentation will focus on my passion for reducing extreme economic inequality, exploring economic inequality as it related to the field of social works and my own personal experience confronting my own challenges with economic inequality.

What is Economic Inequality? Economic Inequality is defined as the unequal distribution of income throughout a population. It refers to how unevenly income is distributed throughout a population. The less equal the distribution, the greater the income inequality. Income inequality is often accompanied by wealth inequality, which is the uneven distribution of wealth. (Kopp, C. M. (n.d))

Theories to Explore and Apply within Economic InequalitySocial Constructionist theorySocial constructionism is a theory of knowledge that holds that characteristics typically thought to be immutable and solely biological—such as gender, race, class, ability, and sexuality—are products of human definition and interpretation shaped by cultural and historical contexts. (Kang et al., 2017)Conflict theoryConflict theory poses that economic inequality is detrimental to society because it creates a system of winners and losers.  This theory sees the disparity as being a powerful group dominating over a weaker group of society.
