Children and adult have differing views when it comes to young children of school age being employed to earn a paid wage. Gasson and Linsell (2011) looked into detail in the research of children and work. They found many positives of children in work through the use of Leonard (2002) who believes that newspaper delivery can have many positive effects on children where it can build a child’s character giving thema hobby to make extra money which can teach children the value of hard work early on. Leonard 2002 also looks into how children have a strong belief that they have earnt the right to participate in forms of paid employment which can increase their social skills of communicating with customers that the newspapers are being given to and also a key reason of children’s employment is also giving them a sense of independence showing there parents and carers that they are mature and confident enough to handle themselves in the working world.Children may see work as a positive where they can earn a wage and increase their confidence through building social skills however, looking through an adults lens there are many potential negative effects of children working at such a young age.Children in work can struggle to be given the same respect that adults are given in the working world. As (Hobbs et al 2007) found that the conditions that employers given children employees are not as good as the ones given to adult employees thus, showing the disregard shown to children whilst in paid employment.Frederiksen researched children in Denmark where they are required to work with adults for safeguarding reasons making sure that children are taken care of. Instead of feeling taken care children often found adults to be controlling asserting there power thus, making children feel isolated even though they are supposed to have the support of an adult. Showing how adults don’t give children the respect that they deserve by looking down on them whenever given a chance to doso making them feel like the bottom of the workplace (Frederiksen 1999).This shows the viewpoint of adults when it comes to children in work as they don’t give children the same respect they would perhaps show there adult colleagues in the working world.
