The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, commonly referred to as 9/11, were a series ofcoordinated attacks orchestrated by the extremist group al-Qaeda. Nineteen hijackers tookcontrol of four commercial airplanes. Two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and UnitedAirlines Flight 175, were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center inNew York City, causing both towers to collapse. Another plane, American Airlines Flight 77,crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93,was headed for another target in Washington, D.C., but passengers heroically fought thehijackers, causing the plane to crash in a Pennsylvania field.The attacks claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured thousands more, making it oneof the deadliest terrorist acts in history. The aftermath of 9/11 profoundly affected the UnitedStates and the world, leading to heightened security measures, the establishment of theDepartment of Homeland Security, and the launch of the Global War on Terror. The events alsospurred military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Each year, 9/11 is commemoratedthrough memorials and ceremonies to honor the victims and recognize the courage of firstresponders and everyday heroes.
