The temperate forest BiomeShadrea FallonCollege of Social Work, Grand Canyon UniversityBIO-220Samridhi ShresthaJune 16, 2024The temperate deciduous forest BiomeThe temperate deciduous forest biome has four distinct seasons and a mild climate. This biome is
dominated by the deciduous woodland environment, which exhibits a diverse range of species and intricate ecological interactions. A temperate deciduous forest is a biome with numerous deciduous trees that shed their leaves in the fall. These woods are frequently referred to as broad-leaf forests because to the trees' huge, flat leaves. Temperate deciduous forests grow in the Earth's mid-latitudes, between the tropics and the Arctic poles. According to Editors (2018), these biomes are exposed to both warm and cold air masses, resulting in four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. As winter approaches and daylight shortens, chlorophyll production in the leaves slows and finally ceases, resulting in the vibrant red, yellow, and orange colors associated with fall. As the Earth began to cool during the Cenozoic Era, temperate woodlands began to emerge.. . The other types of deciduous forests are tropical and subtropical forests. The temperate forest has beavers, emerald ash boner, and the woodland caribou. In North America's deciduous woods, the American beaver is a keystone species. Beavers are well-known for their dam-building efforts, which result in wetlands that serve as critical habitats for a variety of plants and animals. According to (Britannica,2024) These wetlands enhance water quality, reduce flooding, and boost biodiversity. The beaver's involvement in modifying its ecosystem typifies a keystone species, which is an organism with a disproportionately strong impact on its surroundings in relation to its abundance. The emerald ash borer, an invasive insect from Asia, poses a serious danger to ash trees, which are critical components of this ecosystem. According to (Peltier,2014) The larvae feed on the inner bark, blocking the passage of water and nutrients, causing the tree to die. The loss of ash trees has an impact on the species that rely on them, as well as economic consequences owing to the loss of valuable lumber. Efforts to minimize this include biological control using parasitoid
wasps, public awareness campaigns, and quarantines to prevent further spread. The woodland caribou, which was previously common across temperate woodlands, is now endangered owing to habitat loss, predation, and human disturbances. Conservation activities are centered on maintaining vital habitats, decreasing human-wildlife conflict, and doing research to better understand their ecological requirements. In conclusion, the temperate forest biome, with its deciduous woods, is a tapestry woven by the interactions of animals like the American beaver, the invasive emerald ash borer, and the endangered woodland caribou. The health of this biome is dependent on the balance between these species and the activities needed to maintain this fragile equilibrium.References Biologydictionary.net Editors. (2017, May 18).
