ICW #11 - FamilyInstructionsHow has your family's (and/or your own) economic, cultural, and social capital influenced your life opportunities? My family socioeconomic background really was helpful for most of my life. My family is of middle class status with my mother being a retired doctor and my father being a computer engineer for the state of Alabama, so when it comes to resources and opportunities I would say I had plenty. I had access to really good education from a public school, was pushed by my parents to play in sport like baseball, soccer, and basketball from a really young beginning, and through my mothers connections, had been introduced to the medical scene and have shadowed doctors and volunteered at hospital. Because of my mother, I now major in Biology in a pre med track so she had definitely influenced my life and their opportunities. My family have never been in financial stability either so I had the ability to explore careers or hobbies without that financial burden that most don’t have. That being said, my parents still pushed and ingrained in me the importance of standing on my own two feet and not relying on them, so I tutored at a local tutor center for a job during all of high school and actually rarely asked them for money. But I would think the greatest influence they had on me was their Indian aspect. There are so many principes, rituals, values that have been implicitly and explicitly influenced on me that it’ll take my hours to write about but I would say that would be the most important to me is their great sense of family and discipline they have instilled in me.
