Activity 2: Podcast Analysis We will be listening to a podcast from the New York Times by “The Daily” about Russia and the Olympics. Cocktail athletes take replace with frozen clean urine that were stockpiled before the Olympics (gross)using the device to get into those bottles Doctor arrives at Sochi and inspects the area just before the game begins Has a list of which olympians will drink the cocktail and have their urines substituted Games begin! Doctor has an office in the lab waits 100s of staffs to leave the lab changes out of his lab coat and puts on a Russian sweatshirt goes to a storage closet that’s disguised as his shadow lab passes through a small hand sized hole in the wall to a member of the fed service agent takes the bottle and gets the top off dumps out the dirty urine rinses bottle also receives clean urine from the hole and puts it in the right bottle Doctor makes sure the urine matches the sample that was given (using table salt + coffee ground + soap) Doctor is exhausted :( does it for 2 weeks IOC President says if this is true, this is a huge issue!!! Revealed the truth: They were doping for years/systematic doping in the doping scandals The director of the doping tests who takes the test for the athletes why does he/she save it secretly? The documentary is all true doping is true Dr. Rodchenkov: Experiments with drugs, create a special cocktail..? Replace with clean urine Are medals that important..? Why? Change the clean urine through the hand-size hole, rinse it, replace the urine, and match the urine do this every single night for 2 weeks… very passionate… Investigation happened punishing athletes by banning (hanging flags, …) then they should be banned forever? Or outrageoustone b. 정모- The tone is somewhat ominous because it’s talking like the entire event is still a mystery and mite resume in any olympics in the future. c. 예지- the tone/mood is serious and almost only true based. Also, they speaks like it is a top secret. 5. List 3 things from this recording that you think is important a. 성민- Russia is banned from olympic games, Government was involved, But still they avoid their responsibility and justifying them! b. 정모- Russia used frozen urine from the athletes for their drugs, and they admitted in doping. c. 예지- I think the actual interview with Dr. Rodchenkov was important because he says it’s all true and admit it. 6. Why do you think this was made? a. 성민- To win Olympic medals, Putin gaining more power by showing he’s good at everything b. 정모- Russia will do almost anything to grow its global power and also global image, even through cheating in the olympics through using drugs. c. 예지- To inform the truth of Russia’s doping issue and why they could not come up with there name.

What evidence in the recording helps you know why it was made? a. 성민- When Putin argued that it’s U.S’s sloppy tactics to degrade his honor as there is election soon, it made me know that Putin is also thinking of his political position and obviously they dop to win! b. 정모- Even the people who managed the drugs were Russian, and were more easily influenced to just let the athletes using drugs pass. c. 예지- They actually talks about what it happened and how it happened, that Dr. Rodchenkov, the director of taking doping tests, had replaced the clean urines to hide that the athletes were doping. 8. List 2 things this recording tells you about the setting a. 성민- Someone reacting “Wow..” and how author is overlapping the story. The author explained it by telling the story respectively so it is more informational to listener to understand the timeline/events easily with the details b. 정모- Podcast starts with talking about the 2018 Olympics and talks about how previous Olympics were held in Russia making it easier for them to bypass using drugs. c. 예지- The recording starts with the previous Olympics (the PyeongChang Olympics) and explain the past Olympics that was held in Russia, and the things were happening. 9. What information do you gain about this event/subject that would not be conveyed by a written transcript? Be specific. a. 성민- Podcast can show the tone directly so we can listen to author’s tone/opinion clearly, music support the tone, and some actual resources(voice) gives various/realistic mood. b. 정모- The speaker’s voice and tone makes the seriousness of the situation clearer than just reading it off a screen or paper because we can actually hear how they are talking and their voice. c. 예지- I could listen more carefully on what they are talking about because it was hard to understand clearly as they have different accents.
