Course DescriptionThis course considers the role of Chinese ideology in determining Chinese state behavior. The emphasis ison both the permanent and changing nature of the ideology, from Confucianism—what has been termedChina’s imperial ideology—through liberal republicanism, Communism, Maoism, Xi Jinping thought, and wellas potential post-Communist ideologies. Attention is given to historical, theoretical, and practicalmanifestations of Chinese ideology, with a focus on China’s enduring and current national interests.RequisitesFor information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog(https://catalog.liberty.edu/).RationaleThe course provides a graduate level examination of China’s political worldview. PPOG 664 introducespublic policy students to the history of Chinese ideology and its impact on Beijing’s behavior so that UnitedStates decision-makers and analysts will be able to comprehend the permanent aspects of Chinese politicsas well as how it varies under different regimes and leaders. Course Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Describe China’s dynastic ideology, termed its imperial ideology, from the Warring States Period untilthe end of dynastic rule in China. B. Articulate the influence of Western liberalism and republican forms of government. C. Describe the influence of Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist ideology and its application by Mao to createMaoism. D. Explain and evaluate Deng Xiaoping’s modification of Maoism, Xi Jinping as an ideologue and XiJinping Thought. E. Suggest possible ideologies of a post-Communist China. Therefore, the student is required to provide athread in response to the provided topic for each discussion. Each thread must be 400–500 words inlength and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required toreply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be original and unique and should be 200–350words. Research Paper Assignments (3)Research Paper: Memorandum AssignmentThe student will compose a memorandum describing the central research question, researchobjectives, an original argument, and the academic contribution the paper will make, along with anoutline for the paper. The reader should walk away with a clear sense of the scholarly significance ofthe proposed project, along with the specific arguments and scholars the paper will converse with. Thismemo must be one page or less in length, single-spaced.Research Paper: Mini-Proposal Assignment
The student will compose an eight-to-nine-page proposal (For master’s level, six-to-seven pages)which clearly states the research question and research objectives and describes the centralargument. An abbreviated literature review should comprise at least half of the body of the paper andillustrate how the research project will further academic knowledge on the project’s theme of focus.Building out of the literature review, the proposal must also lay out a feasible, social science-basedplan for carrying out the research and building the central argument, a plan which specifies datasources, methods and clearly identifies anticipated challenges associated with project completion. Thestudent should use peer-reviewed work to justify their research design choices and must convincinglydemonstrate that their proposed research design is appropriate for the study of their own researchquestion. Although it is assumed that final research projects for the course will generate policyprescriptions/recommendations, the focus of this assignment is on laying the foundation needed tocomplete the research itself.Research Paper: Final AssignmentThe student will compose a 25-to-30-page (For master’s level, 20-to-25 pages, excluding title pageand bibliography) research paper, based upon the mini-proposal. Policy implications should be offeredtoward the end of the paper, based upon the student’s research findings and conclusions.
