Reflective PracticePart oneIt is so important that social emotional learning be practiced within schools to support students learn all th necessary tools to be successful not only academically but socially as well. After viewing the videos, some ways I plan to implement SEL into my classroom will be helping students be self-aware, be able to have self-management skills and have social awareness. Beginning with self-awareness, I think it is especially important that our younger students begin to learn all about their emotions. I believe teaching your students all about your emotions will help your students with self-awareness. One particular way I plan to do this is by using a guide called “A Little Spot of Emotion.” Essentially, the guide comes with books on different emotions like anger, sadness, happiness, and so on. Not only does it come with the books, but it comes with different plushies, one for each book and different worksheets/activities that you can do with your students to help them recognize their emotions and what they may feel like. I feel as this activity is appropriate for younger aged students and now, they can begin to recognize their own emotions. After teaching self-awareness to your students, I think it is equally as important that they learn self-management skills. Little ones need to learn how and what they can do with such big emotions. I think teaching your class different coping skills like breathing exercises, breaks, or mindful activities that they can do can be helpful for your students. They need to learn what that emotion is in order to be able to manage how their feeling. One way I would implement this specifically in my class, is after recess we will have something called a mindful cool down. Considering my class will be full of preschoolers, it is important that after recess when they are feeling of sorts of different emotions that we have time to cooldown. During this time, we will practice self-regulating skills like breathing exercises. It is also important that my students learn
different ways they can take a break and ground themselves when they are upset or frustrated. Lastly, I also think it is important that my students learn social awareness. It is important that they understand that not only do they have emotions but also their classmates have emotions as well so we must be mindful of one another. One way I plan to do this, is getting them to recognize the importance of sharing. Essentially getting them to recognize that they probably would be upset if they wanted to play in a particular space, like the dramatic play area but their peers are not sharing the space. Getting them to recognize that will probably help them understand that if they feel that way, their peers may also feel that. Part 2Some important competencies and themes that I plan to implement in my classroom include teamwork, communication, creative thinking and overall, just a positive classroom culture. Currently, it is hard for me to determine which competencies my classroom can work on since the school year has not begun yet, but I think that implementing teamwork and creative thinking at the very beginning of the school year can help you create that positive culture. It is important to remind your students your class is a safe place for them and that everyone in there should be a team working together to succeed as a whole and individually.
