Summer 2020 Exams Department of Anthropology The Summer 2020 exams took place during the closure of the LSE campus in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, there were important changes to the assessment arrangements and instructions, which must be taken into consideration if using this exam paper to prepare for future assessments. The following aspects of the Summer 2020 assessments were the sameas exams set by the Department of Anthropology in regular years: •the type and style of exam question •the number of questions available to candidates The following aspects of the Summer 2020 assessments were different from exams set by the Department of Anthropology in regular years: •the duration of the exam (all Summer 2020 exams were organised as 7-day online assessments) •the number of questions that students were required to answer •the use of word limits •the requirement for citations and bibliographies •instructions on submissions

Answer onequestion. Time Allowed Total duration of assessment: 7 days Recommended time to spend on assessment: No more than 8 hours Upper word limit: 3000 words You are supplied with: No additional materials You may also use: This is an open-book examination. Candidates are permitted to use any written material. Your essay should be between 2500 and 3000 words in length. The bibliography is not included in the word limit, but everything else is, including in-text citations, footnotes, and endnotes. Exam scripts over 3000 words will receive a penalty of 5 marks applied to the final grade. There is no penalty for writing less than 2500 words; however, this may indicate that your answer is not as well-developed as it could be. Your essay should include proper in-text citation with all quotes clearly indicated and attributed. A bibliography of texts cited in your essays is required. Failure to acknowledge where you have used the words or ideas of someone else may result in allegations of plagiarism. You must fully complete the coversheet provided for this assessment and submit it together with your essay in a single document. The document must be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. If you submit after the deadline (or an extended deadline if applicable), you will be penalised 5 marks for every half-day (12 hours), or part thereof, for the first 24 hours. You are encouraged, however, to make connections to relevant ideas and readings from across the course and demonstrate knowledge of a range of theoretical approaches and ethnographic materials as appropriate.
